Dollar General Opens Its Doors on Detroit Avenue

The building got a major overhaul this summer, and the business in the middle of downtown recently opened.

Just in time for the holidays, Dollar General recently opened its doors in downtown Lakewood. On Saturday afternoon, the city’s newest dollar store at 15311 Detroit Avenue was bustling. A major overhaul to the building — that most recently housed CVS Pharmacy before it moved a couple blocks west — began during the summer and recently wrapped up. Among the upgrades were a new façade, new front and rear doors, a new parking lot, tuck pointing and new lighting. What do you think of the new Dollar General? Tell us in the comments.

The store has a lot of great deals! Especially since its christmas time. I haven't seen any 7 dollar banquet meals, that's way over dramatic. A nice add to lakewood!   more ›

Design, Sign Plans for New Dollar General OK’d

Plans are moving forward for a new Dollar General store in the space vacated by CVS Pharmacy on Detroit Avenue.

Not everyone’s thrilled with the new tenant, but Dollar General’s design plans were approved for the Detroit Avenue building that most recently housed CVS Pharmacy. The city’s architectural board of review gave the go-ahead for the proposal after requesting a few changes at last month’s meeting. William Trahan, the building contractor for Dollar General, said the among the upgrades are a new façade, new front and rear doors, a new parking lot, tuck pointing and new lighting. “I am going to present two pictures, and you get to select A or B,” he told the board. Board chairman Michael Molinski responded “what if I like C?” The board ultimately agreed on a plan — with conditional approval on exterior issues such as paneling and materials. The…

Hi Mark, Unfortunately actions speak loader than words! If a poll were taken of Lakewood residents, those of us who do not live on Detroit/Grace area would certainly approve a new Drug Mart and would think the city officials would encourage more business in population declining Lakewood than scare it away! I guess I will just have to send my ever increasing tax bill to you Mark, since you seem to…   more ›

Dollar General Plans Face Some Opposition

Store expected to open within the “next couple months.” But first, the design plans must first get the OK from the city’s architectural board of review.

A Dollar General is expected to move into the now-vacant CVS Pharmacy on Detroit Avenue within the “next couple months." But the proposal will face some opposition from city leaders at the city’s architectural board of review meeting on Thursday. “I will oppose it tooth and nail, since it represents not the highest and best use, but the lowest and worse use,” said Ward 2 City Councilman Tom Bullock. He said he plans to attend the ABR meeting on Thursday to address the proposal. “I want to challenge us all to look to the toolbox used in other cities, who have successfully managed — or at least better managed — and zoned commercial development than we have,” Bullock added. Lakewood Patch readers sounded off last week about the proposal for …

Dollar General Moving Into Former CVS Location

City’s director of planning and development: Building’s owner made a “lazy decision.”

The 9,000-square-foot, now-vacant former home of CVS Pharmacy is about to get a new tenant. And city officials are not at all happy about it.  The building, which recently changed ownership, will now be the future home of Dollar General, a national discount chain.  City officials began looking to attract a new tenant when CVS announced it was moving to its new home on the site of the former St. Paul Lutheran Church a couple blocks away. Four local tenants — including a local breakfast restaurant, the owner of a “well-established” Lakewood restaurant, a local hardware store and a fitness center — stepped forward. To no avail.  “We cultivated these leads, and in spite of that this owner made a lazy decision,” said Dru Siley, the city’s …

On Detroit Avenue, at least the groups LakewoodAlive and the Downtown Business Alliance care enough to make sure the city AND the building owners AND the shop owners keep up their property as evidenced in part by the Curtis Block that they have taken upon themselves to keep the windows clean and decorated with current Lakewood events. Unfortunately rents in the downtown area are pretty hefty and …   more ›
