New partnership between the Cuyahoga County Land Bank and the International Services Center to provide housing to immigrants.
One lucky refugee family will get a shot at the American Dream in Lakewood. That's thanks to a new partnership between the Cuyahoga County Land Bank and the International Services Center to provide housing to immigrants. Along with the city officials in attendance, the organizations unveiled the pilot project Wednesday at 1443 Hopkins Avenue in Lakewood — the first location of the program. The home still needs some work, but it’s expected to be completed by the time a refugee family arrives by the end of January. Several more homes — provided by the Land Bank — in Cuyahoga County will be used in the program, officials said.

Structure at 1549 Lakewood Avenue demolished two years after it was deemed a nuisance.
Demolition began on a city-owned apartment building at the corner of Franklin and Lakewood Avenues on Tuesday. It took just several hours to demolish the structure, which had been deemed a nuisance property two years ago. The demolition was a part of a cooperative effort between the city and the Cuyahoga County Land Bank. Mayor Michael Summers even took the opportunity to take a seat in the bulldozer, and get his hands dirty. He said that the property at 1549 Lakewood Avenue would likely be turned into a pocket park. There are as many as eight other city-owned nuisance properties waiting to be demolished.
