For her own SPAM twist on the Monte Cristo sandwich, she won a $150 prize, a Blue Ribbon and a shot at a Hawaiian vacation.
Amy Eagleeye isn’t a chef. The Lakewood resident describes cooking as a hobby. But on Wednesday, she took first place in the annual Great American SPAM Championship at the Cuyahoga County Fair. Besting 26 other contestants, Eagleeye claimed the Blue Ribbon for her “Monte Cristo SPAMuse-Bouche,” a recipe inspired by her love of Monte Cristo sandwiches. Of course, the recipe had to include some SPAM. “It’s a simple recipe,” she said, “and I am a big fan of the Monte Cristo." She won $150 cash prize and a chance to win a trip to Hawaii for her sandwich. “I like to cook, but I don’t do it professionally,” said Eagleeye, an editor at American Greetings. “I think I am a stronger editor. The Cuyahoga County Fair runs Aug. 6-12 at the Fairgrounds in Berea. New features this year include Kachunga and the Alligator, a live gator show; Mac and the Big Cheese, a comedy cooking show; juggler and unicyclist Wade Henry; chainsaw wood carvers; and First Bite Fishing Tanks for kids. But perhaps most exciting for local folks is the performance of Lakewood resident Abby Boland, who recently won the Ohio Idol competition in Columbus. She's expected to take the stage at 8 p.m. Aug. 8. There will also be the usual rides, food, demolition derby, harness racing, a haunted house, animals and contests. 115th annual event set Aug. 8-14 at fairgrounds in Berea
The 115th annual Cuyahoga County Fair starts Monday and runs through Sunday, Aug. 14 at the fairgrounds in Berea. Visitors will find 20 midway rides, more than 100 food stations and thousands of animals and exhibits on the 117-acre site. Events this year will include demolition derbies, moto-cross, a haunted house, thrill shows, fireworks, harness racing and tribute bands. General admission, which does not include rides, is $6 for adults and $5 for seniors 60 and older and kids 4-12. On Thursday, Aug. 11, kids 4-16 get in for $2.
