Bulldogs shock Eagles, 79-72, on Wednesday to advance to regional finals.
It may have been the day before St. Patrick's Day, but the St. Edward Eagles didn't have too much luck against Garfield Heights in the regional semifinal game Wednesday night. After a stellar season, the Eagles' playoff hopes were dashed when they were defeated, 79-72, at Cleveland State's Wolstein Center. The contest started innocently enough for St. Edward — much as the Revere game in the previous round — with the Eagles leading Garfield Heights after a quarter on the strength of several three point shots, this time two of them came from junior Myles Hamilton and one from senior Delbert Love. At times, the Eagles made it look easy. In what looked as though it could be a telling basket for the Eagles, junior Mark Murray spun around a …

Eagles hold off Minutemen, 65-62, to advance to regionals at Cleveland State University on Wednesday.
In what was their first real test of the postseason, the St. Edward Eagles' basketball team proved they are up to the challenge, in knocking off Revere and their gaudy 21-1 record, ending the Minutemen’s season at 21-2. The Eagles began the playoffs with blowout wins over John Marshall and Lakewood, before coming up against Revere. “I’m really proud of our kids, the way they responded when they got down,” said Eagles’ head coach Eric Flannery. “We told the kids at halftime that, in a championship game, it’s the team that believes and keeps it head that wins the game. We were able to keep our heads and keep our composure, and we got the win.” In a game that saw the Eagles — now 18-5 — down by as many as six points in the first quarter, and …

Eagles’ defensive pressure, smooth shooting end Rangers’ win streak, season and playoff-run.
After last night’s District semifinal boys’ basketball game at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School, the future seemed to be a common thread between two very different area basketball programs: the St. Edward Eagles and the Lakewood Rangers. The scoreboard also told a very different tale of two schools, each separated by less than a mile of Detroit Avenue. In the end, St. Edward beat its crosstown rival, the Lakewood Rangers, 93-39. The long, athletic style of play for the Eagles was too much for the relative inexperience of the Rangers. The playoff-tested roster of the Eagles looked ready to play from the opening tip, jumping out to an 8-0 run to begin the game on the strength of three-pointers from senior guard Kyle Pisco and …

In another huge upset, Rangers win fifth in a row against Normandy; advance in tournament to face juggernaut St. Edward High School.
“WE WANT THE EAGLES! WE WANT THE EAGLES! WE WANT THE EAGLES!” Early in the fourth quarter, with their team headed for victory, students in the lively Lakewood student section let it be known Friday night who they'd like to play next in the regional basketball tournament at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School. With the Rangers' huge upset against Normandy High School — and a buzzer-beating jumpshot — the team will now face St. Edward High School in the regional semifinals. In a contest that came down to the wire, senior Dan Mazzeo squared up and shot, sinking what was unquestionably the biggest basket of the season for Lakewood. And the streak continues. Lakewood seems to have found its hot streak, winning its fifth-straight game …
Eagles’ speed, size and skill too much for overmatched Lawyers. St. Edward to square off against Lakewood High School.
St. Edward head basketball coach Eric Flannery was hoping for a perfect game Friday night, when his team squared off against John Marshall in its second-round tournament matchup. So it should come as no surprise that he was a bit disappointed when, at halftime, he headed into the locker room at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School leading John Marshall, 48-18. Was he upset that John Marshall scored any points at all? “Going into tonight, we knew we were the more talented team," he said. "We’d like to play with a bit more focus. We needed to step up our intensity." After halftime, the Eagles did just that, while getting several bench players key time. The lead was stretched to 50 before late three pointers from John Marshall’s Yeremis …

Rangers roll to 67-53 triumph after trailing at halftime
It took a trip to the locker room at halftime for Lakewood High School's boys basketball team to finally understand coach Phil Argento's message. Trailing by seven points after two quarters and with Argento's pleas to play defense going unheeded, the Rangers suddenly scored easy points off forced turnovers in a rollicking second half to win at Westlake, 67-53, on Tuesday night. "It has taken three months, almost four, for them to realize that defense jump-starts the offense," Argento said after the Rangers closed with a 19-5 flurry to improve their record to 5-14. Westlake coach Bob Patton couldn't quibble. "We forced the tempo in the first half by playing sound defense," Patton said. "The momentum changed in the third quarter. We …

Strongsville dominates in boys basketball matchup Friday in Lakewood.
Senior Night for the Lakewood boys basketball team wasn't kind to the Rangers. The squad dropped a 72-45 decision to visiting Strongsville — despite 18 points from sophomore Pete Nelson and horrific free throw shooting by the Mustangs. "We can't seem to put together back-to-back games," said Lakewood coach Phil Argento, whose team takes the floor on Saturday afternoon at Bay with a 3-14 record. That game is a make up from a Feb. 1 cancellation. Starting seniors Chris Bielopetrovich, Mike Gonzalez and Dan Mazzeo in their final home game, the Rangers fell behind 10-0 at the start and never fully recovered. Strongsville got a combined 57 points from seniors Gurjeet Gill, Ray Hamilton and Aaron White in the win. The Mustangs were able to …

Rangers basketball team goes down, 74-67, to tough Elyria squad.
In what would seem to have been a mismatch, the Lakewood boys’ basketball team was anything but overmatched. They came into Friday night’s Northeast Ohio Conference matchup against Elyria with a record of 3-11, while the Pioneers came in at 10-5. In their last contest with Elyria, the Rangers were pounded in an 85-71 loss at Elyria. If last night’s game was any indication, Rangers’ head coach Phil Argento and his squad have come a long way earlier in the season, despite facing plenty of adversity. “We try to look at each game on an individual level," he said. "Are we getting better? I’d say yes. Our defense was an important part of the night, we tried to drop (down low) more, and give more help on the big guy.” The big guy that Argento …

Lakewood frustrated by lack of production on offense, lack of pressure on defense.
It was a frustrating night for the Lakewood High School boys’ basketball team. The boys lost 50-42 to Normandy, dropping to 3-10, while the Invaders improved to 6-6 with a road win in this Northeast Ohio Conference matchup. The Rangers, who clearly missed junior Jesse Littleton — who did not play for undisclosed reasons — were well within reach of the victory throughout the game, until a collapse in the last four minutes of the fourth quarter led to their demise. Lakewood was within striking distance thanks to a solid all-around game from sophomore Pete Nelson, who led the team with 13 points. Junior Conor Mabry chipped in 10 points. The Invaders were led by senior twin brothers Dylan Seitz, who finished the game with 16 points, and Dean …

Eagles fall at undefeated Garfield Heights, 85-82
A tough road loss to the area's best basketball team has only fortified state championship hopes at Lakewood St. Edward High School. The Eagles battled to the last second at Garfield Heights on Thursday night, dropping an 85-82 decision that left visiting players and fans disappointed. St. Edward coach Eric Flannery looked past the loss and said he still sees a bright future. "This is what it is all about," Flannery said after the emotionally-draining game in front of a soldout gym packed with nearly 2,000 fans. "It was tournament preparation basketball at its best. If we are fortunate to win a district, and that is still a long way off, we might have the opportunity to play them again. It would be nicer to win that game." Delbert Love …

Sorry Drew, this isn't a misquote, leading by 30 or not, Coach Flannery was just disappointed in his team's focus overall for the game; he knew they could play better regardless of score. After last night's game, he said that focus and intensity weren't an issue.   more ›
