Josh Reagan will continue his basketball career for the Red Storm.
The University of Rio Grande men’s basketball team announced the signing of Lakewood High School grad Josh Reagan for the 2013-14 season. Reagan, a 6-foot-6, 235-pound power forward, averaged 25 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.3 steals per game at Cuyahoga Community College this year. He ranked third nationally in scoring and sixth in rebounding among all NJCAA Division II teams. Reagan is the son of Bill and Gina Reagan of Lakewood. He spent one season at Delaware Technical Community College, where he averaged 19.1 points and 12.2 rebounds for a team that reached the NJCAA national tournament. “I didn’t get into the basketball thing early like everybody else. I only played my senior year in high school and the two years of JUCO, …

School board opens gyms of city's schools for the sport; more than 100 people attend city council meeting to support hoops.
Nothin’ but net. After weeks of discussion, planning and development, Lakewood Recreation Department commissioner Erin Fach received unanimous approval from the Board of Education at Monday’s regular meeting to move forward with a pilot indoor basketball program. Despite some early apprehensions from board members — such as security concerns and injury liability — the board OK'd the program relatively quickly. Although it hasn't begun yet, the schools' program hasn’t undergone the same sort of scrutiny and contention, when compared with the outdoor pilot basketball program at Kaufmann Park. All games will take place on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday evenings. They will be supervised, students and adults will play within preset age groups (…

Citing concerns from neighbors, Mayor Michael Summers says the basketball court will close at least one day per week.
Following complaints to city officials regarding foul language and “threatening” behavior at Kauffman Park’s basketball court, Mayor Michael Summers has decided to close the hoops at least one day each week. Residents on Lakeland Avenue told Lakewood City Council on Monday that they were fed up. Summers said that the courts — the city's only public hoops — were staying open. By Wednesday, he said the park should close either on Saturday or Sunday — but he’s leaning toward closing the park on Saturday and opening later on Sunday. “I think if I were a resident — and I think about this as if I were a resident — (I would) more likely to be around on the weekend,” Summers said. “So this is giving them 24 to 36 hours of not having to deal with …

Neighbors of Kauffman Park tell Lakewood City Council of four-letter troubles at the city's only basketball court.
A few residents of Lakeland Avenue put a full-court press on Lakewood City Council on Monday night about the city’s only public basketball court. Kauffman Park — the pilot site for the sport’s return to the city following a four-year hiatus — has been a popular destination for youth looking to play ball. Neighbors of the park say it has also been a destination for trouble. Kim Schelgunov, a resident on Lakeland Avenue, told council that foul language is his primary concern. His frustration came to a head on Memorial Day when he says basketball players began dropping the “f-bomb” around his four children. He walked across the street toward the court with a baseball bat in hand. A police officer at the basketball court diffused the situation…

Hundreds of students from Lakewood elementary schools play in annual youth basketball tournament.
The wet weather has kept many athletes from Lakewood High School and St. Edward High School off the diamonds and courts and fields this spring, but the games went on recently for hundreds of elementary school students. The Lakewood Police Department held its 13th annual D.A.R.E. Basketball Tournament earlier this month at Harding Middle School, where several hundred fifth graders representing each of Lakewood’s seven elementary schools played each other over the course of a day. In the end, one team outlasted all others. The winning team is pictured to the right, along with its coaches and mascots. Front row, from left, mascots Mac McFarlin and Carlisle Cashman. Second row, from left, Isaac Karel, Gregory Whitkofski, Sarah Krost, Mady …

Athletic and scholastic achievements bring parents, pride to Harrison Elementary.
Monday’s regular Board of Education meeting informally turned into ladies night at Harrison Elementary, as many girls attended to accept trophies, awards and rounds of congratulation. To tip off the night, Assistant Superintendent Jeff Patterson recognized the Harding Middle School eighth grade girls basketball team for going 18-1 and bringing home a Northeast Ohio Conference title. The team, which entered the tournament as a number two seed, came away with a championship and was recognized by the Board and their head coach, Mike Harper, for their achievements on the court. “They had a cumulative team grade point average of 3.66,” Harper said. “What you need to know about that is not only was it the highest at Harding Middle School, but it…

Boys basketball squad wins its fourth game in a row against Copley. Next playoff game set for Friday night in Brecksville.
The Lakewood High School boys basketball team is clicking right now — and it's using all the help it can get. A combination of some excellent efforts individually, discipline and maybe a little bit of voodoo have all paid off for the Rangers, as the squad grabbed its fourth win in a row Monday night in a huge upset against Copley. The ninth-seeded Rangers beat the fifth-seeded Copley, 64-59, to improve to an unlikely 7-14. For most of the game, the score wasn’t even that close. At one point in the second half, Lakewood stretched its lead to 14 points — with its excellent perimeter shooting and up-tempo offense. When it works, it really works. “I’ve got all kinds of people doing voodoo, and trying to figure on what the winning is all about…

In regular-season finale, Eagles grab big win on the road over Cardinals, 108-105.
If you’re a fan of basketball in Northeast Ohio, a friendly piece of advice: Grab a pen and a calendar, circle March 19, and cross your fingers. If the area is treated to another round of Mentor vs. St. Edward in the Division I Cleveland Regional final, we’ll all be winners – no matter who is cutting down the nets at the end of the night. Even with nothing on the line in a nonconference tilt Saturday night at Mentor, the Eagles and Cardinals waged an epic battle that left the packed gym exhausted and hungry for more. St. Edward survived some late struggles at the free-throw line and a few outrageous baskets by Mentor senior Cole Krizancic to outlast the Cards, 108-105. “My goal was to play a close game in the fourth quarter so that we …

Eagles knock off previously undefeated Columbus Northland Vikings in a game up for grabs until the final buzzer
Just hours after the season tipped off in December, the St. Edward High School basketball team lost to Toledo St. John, regarded as one of the top teams in the state. Later that month, at a tournament in San Diego, the Eagles lost to Bishop O’Dowd, a team then ranked among the top 25 nationally. And on Thursday night, they lost on the road to undefeated Garfield Heights. Three big games for the Eagles and three frustrating losses. When coach Eric Flannery designed the schedule last year, he wanted to challenge his team with as many games as possible against top opponents. But would the Eagles ever break through and beat one? Yes. On Saturday night, at last, the Eagles jumped out to a big lead over Columbus Northland, then held on during a …

Hamilton and Brown lead Eagles to 93-63 non-conference win.
This isn’t the type of basketball St. Edward coach Eric Flannery is used to seeing from his teams. Then again, he certainly isn’t complaining. A dyed-in-the-wool aficionado of half-court basketball, Flannery is finding fun in having a fast-paced attack. His Eagles squad, led by the athletic backcourt of Myles Hamilton and Elijah Brown, ran away with another one Saturday night, downing host Lake Catholic, 93-63, in non-conference action. The game, a makeup date following a Dec. 4 postponement, was the second night of back-to-back for both teams. Lake Catholic (9-5) was coming off loss in North Coast League play against Villa Angela-St. Joseph on Friday, while St. Edward (12-4) had toppled rival St. Ignatius. The Cougars were willing to …
