The Kowit & Passov Real Estate group closed the deal this week on the acquisition of Lakewood Center North at 14600 Detroit Avenue for just under $3.4 million.
The same folks who brought success to the Bailey and INA buildings on Detroit Avenue are looking to take some of their talents across the street to the largest commercial property of its kind in Lakewood. The Kowit & Passov Real Estate group closed the deal this week on the acquisition of Lakewood Center North at 14600 Detroit Avenue for just under $3.4 million. That news comes after the 258,470-square-foot building — among the largest commercial structures in Lakewood and certainly the tallest — has seen its number of tenants dwindle in recent years to about 50 percent occupancy. United Transportation Union, an AFL-CIO labor union affiliate representing railroad workers, was headquartered in the building until it moved to North Olmsted a …

A workshop, slated for Monday, is first in a series focusing on community development.
The last time the city of Lakewood visited its Community Vision document, President Bill Clinton was in his first year in the Oval Office. A lot has changed in Lakewood since 1993. Lakewood City Council and the Planning Commission will begin the first in a series of workshops to update the city’s Community Vision on Monday in the University of Akron-Lakewood’s Bailey Building This workshop — to take place from 6:30-8:30 p.m. — will review the current vision, invite discussion and outline possible courses of action. “What do 52,000 people agree is the vision of tomorrow?” said Dru Siley, the city’s planning and development director, at a planning commission meeting earlier this year. “What’s the common theme? That’s going to be the …

Plans still on schedule to open satellite branch in the fall.
Just eight days ago, the University of Akron's Lakewood branch showed only the bones of a facility. Now, the spaces in the Bailey Building on Detroit Avenue are starting to resemble classrooms. The ductwork is done. So is the electrical wiring. Lakewood Development Director Dru Siley said plans are still set to open the school's Lakewood satellite branch in September. This week, workers have been hustling to finish the drywall.

Eddie and Eddie's expected to open near the end of the year in the newly renovated Bailey Building.
Burgers, bourbon and apple pie are coming to Lakewood. And at the corner of Warren Road and Detroit Avenue, they’re coming to one of the most visible spaces in the city. Eddie and Eddie’s, a new restaurant owned by Northeast Ohio restaurateur Eddie Cerino, is expected to open near the end of the year in the newly renovated Bailey Building. Cerino signed the lease two weeks ago, and construction is expected to begin soon. With the news of University of Akron opening a satellite campus in the building, he said the timing couldn’t be better. “We think it’s one of the top-ten restaurant locations (in the Cleveland area),” Cerino said. “We’ve gotten to know the folks at Deagan’s and Melt. We thought we’d bring in a restaurant that complements …

Within five years, there could be as many as “a couple hundred” students on the Lakewood campus.
Classes at the University of Akron’s satellite campus in Lakewood are expected to begin this fall at the Bailey Building on Detroit Avenue. In the beginning, there will be only a few dozen students attending them. However, within five years, there could be as many as “a couple hundred” University of Akron students on the streets of Lakewood. Holly Harris Bane, the university’s associate vice president for strategic initiatives, said that usually there are 150 students on the first day of classes at a satellite branch. “It’s going to be a very small number because of the targeted degrees for students we’ll have in there,” she said. “We will really begin to ramp up our programs in the spring of 2012 and the fall of 2012.” Last month, the …

Well yah, it's creative thinking...but what are you going to do with all the air conditioning units and the transmission antennae up there. There's just no room for any of that stuff. And Ian, about the hotel patio...not at Lakewood Center North. The restaurant has all the best space tied up for that.   more ›
