Fallen Firefighters Memorial unveiled at Lakewood Fire Department during special ceremony on Sunday.
Every hand was on deck Sunday morning at the Lakewood Fire Department as Hundreds attended a special ceremony to remember and honor the 343 firefighters who died on 9/11, along with the four Lakewood firefighters who have died in the line of duty. The Lakewood Fallen Firefighter Memorial was unveiled to the community in an hourlong event with firefighters, local elected leaders and residents in attendance.

Hundreds attended a special ceremony at Fire Station No. 1 on Sunday to remember and honor the 343 firefighters who died on 9/11, along with the four Lakewood firefighters who have died in the line of duty. The Lakewood Fallen Firefighter Memorial was unveiled to the community in an hourlong event with firefighters, local elected leaders and residents in attendance. Using two steel beams from the World Trade Center, using workers from just about every department — the city built a permanent memorial to honor fallen firefighters. The Lakewood Fallen Firefighter Memorial is set to be unveiled to the community. Using two steel beams from the World Trade Center, the city has erected a permanent memorial to fallen firefighters.
To remember and honor the 343 firefighters who died on 9/11 — along with the four Lakewood firefighters who have died in the line of duty — the city of Lakewood is hosting a special ceremony on Sept. 11. The Lakewood Fallen Firefighter Memorial is set to be unveiled to the community. Using two steel beams from the World Trade Center, the city has erected a permanent memorial to fallen firefighters. The program is set to begin at Fire Station No. 1 at 14601 Madison Avenue at 9 a.m. Madison Avenue will be closed from Warren Road to Belle Avenue, as attendance is expected to spill out onto the street. Ray Fisher just finished the “best work” of his 27-year career with the city of Lakewood. That realization came moments after he welded two rusted and torn steel beams from the World Trade Center to a permanent memorial in front of Lakewood Fire Station No. 1 on Tuesday afternoon. “It’s an honor, there’s no doubt about that,” he said. “It’s one of those goosebump things. You know you’re doing something that people are going to love and appreciate when they see it. Firefighters gather to bury time capsule; steel beams set to be unveiled Sept. 11 for special ceremony.
The new memorial at the Lakewood Fire Department is starting to take shape — just in time for a memorial ceremony set for the 10-year anniversary of the attacks on Sept. 11. The pentagonal base of the memorial is set in stone. And concrete. Two beams that were once a part the World Trade Center in New York City will now be used as a memorial to honor firefighters who died on Sept. 11. Just before the last layer of concrete was poured to secure the beams, a large group of Lakewood firefighters to drop in a time capsule. No offense to God, but coming from someone whose father was there - he is alive and well :) - this memorial should be at the exact time of the attack. As a kid I would visit my dad on the 102nd floor and essentially lived in the shadow of NYC.
