Lakewood Schools Hosts First Anti-Violence Forum This Week

The district's partnership with the Lakewood Police Department, the Domestic Violence & Child Advocacy Center and other agencies is the result of a $500,000 federal grant.

Lakewood City Schools will partner with the Lakewood Police Department, Domestic Violence & Child Advocacy Center and the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center to offer a community forum on anti-violence* Wednesday. The forum is the first in Ranger 360, a plan funded by a $500,000 federal grant that will increase middle school and high school student safety. More about Ranger 360 The forum will begin at 7 p.m. at Garfield Middle School. What issues do you hope will be discussed at the forum? Lakewood Schools Wants Parent Feedback

The survey seeks parents feedback about Title I.

The Lakewood City School District wants to know what parents think about the Title I program services offered to elementary-school-aged children.   The responses will be used to improve the Title I program.  But you've got to act fast; the survey closes at 8 p.m. May 31. High School’s Academic Challenge Headed to National Competition

The regional champs were recognized at a recent board of education meeting after an undefeated season.

After going undefeated in the regular season, the Lakewood High School Academic Challenge team is headed to compete against schools from across the country. The team was honored at the school board meeting last Monday. High school teachers Bob Sedlak and Peter Petto took over the team this past fall.  “We may be working all summer long,” Sedlak told the school board. “This is a great group of kids.” The team went undefeated, and is scheduled to compete in the National Invitational Tournament in Washington, DC  at the end of the month. The squad’s strengths include math, science (chemistry and biology), history, government, astronomy and music. “The students love the competition,” Sedlak added. “If Mr. Petto and I would practice every day …

Rangers Tennis Wins Conference Championship

Lakewood finished 13-4 in the West Shore Conference this season.

The Lakewood High School boys' tennis team finished off one of its best seasons by beating Rocky River 3-2 and claiming the West Shore Conference title. What makes it even sweeter is that it's the team's first year in the league. Seniors Chris Brinich and Dan Mezin won in straight sets at second and third singles, respectively. The second doubles team of senior Matt Carlson and junior Colin Levis dominated in their straight set win. The Rangers were undefeated in the WSC and completed their regular season at 13-4. They have now won three of their past four league titles.

Record-Breaking Lakewood Basketball Player Ready for the Next Level

With family and friends at his side on Monday, Pete Nelson officially committed to attend school and play basketball for Centre College in Kentucky, where he will join the ROTC program.

Help Lakewood High School Win $50K

Students have custom designed shoes in national contest.

Lakewood High School is one of 50 schools from across the country named finalists in Vans Custom Culture art competition that includes a grand prize of $50,000 for the winning high school’s art department. The contest was created by Vans to inspire high school students across the United States to embrace their creativity and draw attention to the importance of art as an integral part of our schools’ focus in the face of shrinking budgets. The contest started off with 1,500 schools and is now down to the top 50 from five different regions. LHS is one of 10 schools selected in the Northeast Region, which includes 16 states. Lakewood Student Wins National Merit Scholarship

A local student won $2,500 in scholarships.

A Lakewood High School student has been announced as National Merit Scholarship winners. Sheila McMahon was one of 2,500 winners chosen from a pool of 15,000 across the nation. She plans to study linguistics in college. National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors.
