The new agreement — replacing the existing contract set to expire at the end of next school year — will save the district about $2 million per year through 2013-14.
In what is considered a big first step in belt-tightening for the cash-strapped Lakewood City Schools, district officials have wrapped up negotiations with the teachers union. And at a special meeting on Friday morning, the school board approved the contract with the Lakewood Teachers Association that will run through the 2013-2014 school year. The new contract — replacing the existing one set to expire at the end of next school year — will save the district about $2 million per year, according to officials. With the district looking to close an estimated $12.4 million budget deficit in 2015, the district’s labor unions agreed to reopen their contracts for negotiation. Teachers accepted a 0 percent base pay increase in 2013-2014; they’ll …

Ohio Heritage Summer Camp slated for June, offered through the Lakewood Recreation Department.
This isn’t your typical summer camp. Starting in June, kids in Lakewood will have the opportunity to party like its 1829. As part of the Ohio Heritage Summer Group, children will learn how to cook, go to “pioneer school,” play historic games and work on nifty crafts — as if it’s the 1800s. The Old Stone House, located in Lakewood Park, will be the site of the camp, courtesy of the Lakewood Historical Society. The Lakewood Recreation Department program is for students heading into the third, fourth or fifth grades — or sixth grade students who haven’t participated in the camp before. The cost of registration is $49 per student (for Lakewood residents) and $59 for non-residents. The first of four sessions begin June 18; registration is …

The students are aged 18-22 and are studying to be elementary and middle school teachers. Elaban is set to graduate from Ohio University this summer with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology. Daughter of board member Ed Favre hired as recreation department athletic coordinator in 2004.
Correction: This version corrects the spelling of Leslie Krogman. The Ohio Ethics Commission is looking into an allegation of nepotism against school board member Ed Favre in connection with the board's 2004 hire of his daughter for the recreation department. Favre, who claims — with the board's backing — that he did nothing wrong, abstained from the vote to hire his daughter Leslie Krogman as athletic coordinator. Lakewood is one of a handful of school districts in Ohio that oversees the recreation department that serves city residents; the school board votes on spending, hires and other business. Schools Superintendent Jeff Patterson told Lakewood Patch the state ethics commission contacted him Monday. He said the district will cooperate…
Avon schools superintendent will run the district’s recreation and human resources departments.
The school board has found a new recreation director — one that also will run the school district's human resources department. The board voted Monday to hire Jim Reitenbach, who has been the Avon schools superintendent since 1999. Reitenbach resigned from Avon schools in December. Reitenbach will lead the district’s shaken-up recreation department, as well as its human resources department. The recreation director's post opened after the board did not renew long-time Director Erin Fach's contract's earlier this year. The human resources job is open because Director Deb Cahoon is retiring this year. Reitenbach will begin his new post on Aug. 1 at a salary of $113,000. Reitenbach has been superintendent in Avon since 1999. He retired in …

No surprise here: No alcohol, tobacco or re-entry permitted.
Lakewood students attending prom this year at the Great Lakes Science Center from 7 to 11 p.m. May 12 — and after-prom at the high school from 11:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. — should expect to have a good time. But they should also expect some rules. As expected, no drinking, no tobacco use permitted. Here’s the scoop, thanks to the prom committee: Rules for Prom: No ID = No Entrance; Failure To Purchase Before April 20 = No Entrance Formal Dance Dress Code: Rules for those attending after-prom: No ID = No Entrance; Failure To Purchase Before April 20 = No Entrance
Prom slated to take place at the Great Lakes Science Center on May 12.
Prom is expected to be a night to remember for the seniors at Lakewood High School. But organizers could still use a hand getting the event ready. This year’s prom — slated to take place at the Great Lakes Science Center from 7 to 11 p.m. May 12 — still needs some food donations. The after-prom — from 11:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. — needs parents of seniors to volunteer. Those looking to volunteer are encouraged to email Vicki Smigelski or call her at 216-789-5020.
