Sophie Elizabeth Rush, 96, Founder of Rush Inn, Beloved Wife and Mother

Rush was known for her local business upstarts and is survived by her many sons and grandchildren.

Sophie Elizabeth “Betty” Rush, 96, died this past Tuesday, Jan. 24. Rush, a long time employee of Miller’s Dining Room, was best known in the city for founding Lakewood Clothing & Resale and the popular Rush Inn Bar & Grill, according to McGorray-Hanna Funeral Home. She is survived by her sons Donald, Dennis and Kenneth and her many loving grandchildren. The funeral mass will take place at St. Luke Church on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 11:00 a.m. Friends may call in the McGorray-Hanna Funeral Home of Lakewood on Friday between 4 and 8 p.m. Rush will be laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Thelma Fryer, 91, Beloved Wife, Mother and Sister

After battling a lengthy illness, Fryer passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 18.

Thelma Ruth Fryer, 91, Lakewood, passed away on Jan. 18 at Amherst Manor Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. Fryer was born in Fallentimber, PA, was a graduate of Spangler High School and earned a degree from Cambria Rowe Business School in Johnstown, PA. She was the beloved wife of the late Walter H. Fryer, according to Busch Funeral and Crematory Services.  Thelma was a member of Ann Rutledge Chapter #453, a past Matron of Lincoln Chapter #309 and a past Worthy High Priestess of Lakewood White Shrine #26. Her favorite pastimes included Bingo, Scrabble and playing card games. She is survived by her two daughters, Bonnie Jean of Vermilion and Ruth Ann Fryer of Sheffield Lake; granddaughters Kimberly K. Michael Echko, 47, U.S. Navy Veteran, Beloved Father

Michael is survived by his son, Joseph Echko.

Michael David Echko, 47, passed away Friday, Jan. 13 at his home in Lakewood. He was born on Dec. 11, 1964 in Lorain, Ohio, according to the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral and Cremation Center. During the 1980's, Echko proudly served in the United States Navy and was stationed in San Diego, California. He was a seaman of the USS Bagley and served throughout the Western Pacific. Before his passing, he was employed at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. He is survived by his son, Joseph Echko, Lorain; sisters, Donna Furci, Lorain and Shirley Poe, Sheffield Lake; three nieces and two nephews. He enjoyed watching football and was an avid music fan. Dr. Bernadine Healy Loop, Who Led National Institutes of Health, American Red Cross and More, Died Saturday at 67

The Gates Mills resident and wife of former Cleveland Clinic CEO Floyd D. Loop wrote a book about her journey with brain cancer.

Dr. Bernadine Healy Loop, the first woman to serve as director of the National Institutes of Health and past president of the American Red Cross, died Saturday, Aug. 6, at age 67. The Gates Mills resident wrote a memoir about her experience with brain cancer titled The Living Time: Faith and Facts to Transform Your Cancer Journey in 2007. She was named Cleveland Clinic head of research in 1985, NIH director in 1991, Ohio State University college of medicine dean in 1995, American Heart Association president in 1998 and Red Cross CEO in 1999. In 1994, she ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate, losing in the primary to Mike DeWine. Remembering Jane Scott, 92, the World's Oldest Teenager and Cleveland's First Rock 'n' Roll Reporter

The Lakewood resident, who covered rock music for The Plain Dealer, died July 4.

Jane Scott, a longtime Lakewood resident, died this morning at age 92, according to an obituary published in The Plain Dealer. She had already passed her 71st birthday in 1990, when I first met her at a wedding reception backstage at the Cleveland Agora before a Ratt concert. The bride and groom, who had met and fallen in love at a previous Ratt concert, exchanged vows on stage with the glam-metal band’s drum set as a backdrop and an ordained minister presiding. Memorial Service for Bruce Beebe, Popular Lakewood High Teacher, Set for Sunday

Beebe taught history and social studies in Lakewood and was on the part time faculty at John Carroll University.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Bruce T. Beebe, a popular Lakewood High School teacher, will take place at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 5, at West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church, 20401 Hilliard Blvd., Rocky River. The 68-year-old Lakewood resident, who died May 21, taught history and social studies at Lakewood High for 30 years before retiring in 2001. The online guest book that accompanies his obituary on the McGorray-Hanna Funeral Home website is filled with comments from former students, describing him as an inspirational, enthusiastic and creative teacher, who made history fun and each student feel special. Eugene “Gene” Myslenski, 95, Former Principal of Lakewood and Cleveland Heights High Schools

He was a football star at Western Reserve University in the mid-1930s.

Eugene “Gene” W. Myslenski, a Western Reserve University football star of the 1930s, who died April 25 at age 95, served as principal at Lakewood High School in the 1970s and at Cleveland Heights High School in the late 1960s. Myslenski, a graduate of East High School in Cleveland, was an All-Big Four guard for the Western Reserve Red Cats before graduating from WRU in 1938. He later served as an assistant coach for his alma mater and longtime secretary of the Case Reserve Athletic Club. He was inducted into the Case Western Reserve Varsity Athletics Hall of Fame in 1978. The World War II Army veteran coached and taught many student-athletes, and belonged to numerous sports and education-related associations over the years. Myslenski was …

Remembering, Honoring a Lakewood Firefighter

Former captain of the Lakewood Fire Department, Jim Monica, dies at 82 years old.

James L. Monica was honored Thursday by the men who stood by his side for decades fighting fires. Monica, who died April 17 at 82 years old, was a long-time captain at the Lakewood Fire Department. The Lakewood native's funeral service Thursday at St. Clement Catholic Church, following a special ceremony by Lakewood firefighters.

Elsie Baker, 81, Wrote Books About Children With Cystic Fibrosis

She wrote under the pseudonym Meg Woodson to share stories from her own life.

Elsie Baker and her late husband, the Rev. Clinton C. Baker, came to Northeast Ohio from Tennessee in 1966, so their two young children could be treated for cystic fibrosis at Cleveland’s state-of-the-art medical facilities.  The Lakewood resident, who died April 10 at age 81, wrote books under the pseudonym Meg Woodson to tell about her youngsters living with chronic illness and about the family dealing with their deaths.  Their son, Timothy, was 12 when he died 1974. Their daughter, Elizabeth “Betsy,” died in 1983 at age 23.  Baker changed the names of her husband and children in her books, but readers had no trouble recognizing that her books were based on fact, according to reviews posted on online book sites. Ohio Supreme Court Justice Francis E. Sweeney Sr. Dies at 77

The Lakewood resident served 34 years as a judge.

Funeral Mass for the late Ohio Supreme Court Justice Francis E. Sweeney Sr., who died April 10 at age 77, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 14, at St. Luke Catholic Church, 1212 Bunts Road.  Calling hours are 2-9 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, at McGorray-Hanna Funeral Home of Lakewood, 14133 Detroit Ave.  The Lakewood resident served on the Supreme Court of Ohio from 1992 until retiring at the end of 2004 after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70. He previously served for four years on Ohio’s Eighth District Court of Appeals and 18 years as a Cuyahoga County Common Pleas judge.
