I always thought they should have one, given the great view. Can't wait!

I look forward to relaxing on this patio enjoying the best skyline view in the city. Thanks!

One of the best treasure of Lakewood is Pier W. I enjoy my 10% off at Happy Hour - great fun!
ian king June 17, 2013 at 07:20 pm
forgot to add I found kheim's a bit too dirty, unkept. and the soup i found too salty. cleanliness…Read More is a most for my family. i wish lakewood would do what many other hip cities do which is require restaurants to post their health code inspection results. most cities do that today and you can see how the place scored on several health code requirements, including cleanliness. so many ma and pa restaurants in this town are rundown, dirty and well, they don't seem to care if their ambiance for their paying customer is enjoyable. sticky tables - found at kheim's - are not my thing. who knows what is on that table!
Brian June 18, 2013 at 12:04 pm
Brandon, you are absolutely correct. While I don't post a whole lot, I do read articles and post of…Read More others. Ian never has anything good to say. Can someone verify if he even lives in Lakewood?
He talks about wanting diversity in food, but does he even go out to eat. There is a lot of food diversity in Lakewood. Where do I start? Barroca, Deagans, Pier W, Players on Madison, The Melt, Georgetown, John's Diner, and more. There is plenty of diversity and the more the better.
ian king June 18, 2013 at 06:30 pm
Hi Brian, my oh my - such desire to know my personal life! a bit strange i find it all. please…Read More re-read with a bit more open mind my posts, and i offer lots of suggestions for IMPROVING life in somewhat retro Lakewood/NE Ohio. diversity in food is just not about menu options, but also about affordability and health.
all the restaurants you mentione are good of course, but VERY EXPENSIVE for a lot of people who now call Lakewood their home. Pier W, Georgetown, Players, Deagans, etc. are very expensive. John's Diner i find way to dirty and dull/outdated interior - i mean when i give my money to a restaurant i also want a clean, enjoyable ambiance - someplace that tells me the owner has invested some bucks back into the place. when was the last time John's Diner spent any money on the place's design. I love Georgetown and Vosh - here is a great example of owners really wanting their customers to have a great time, but is not cheap. And Melt, well, it is very collegiate and if you are over 40, heart attack heaven. So, yes, i enjoy those restaurants, but only on special occasions, they are expensive. i am suggesting - again, can you re-read my posts? - some new places in town that offer something besides BURGERS AND BEER - healthy stuff - and are under $ 12.00 The new Barrio on Madison is fantastic - fresh food, $ 3.00 tacos, and amazing gaucamole - all in an interior that is hip, fun and exciting to spend a night out on the town. I hope they set the new standard for restaurants in Lakewood.

The ARB should be commended for their great work. Thank you for everything you do - even if some…Read More residents are too naive to understand your importance. You provide such an important service to Lakewood
ian king June 17, 2013 at 12:11 am
Say what Love Lakewood? Important service? I guess discouraging business growth is now considered…Read More important in population declining, income declining, crime increasing Lakewood?
No city that has a realistic vision of itself today in NE Ohio would make developers like Clifton Pointe and businesses like BE and Drug Mart go through the Rust Belt Delusion Thinking/Russo self-importance bandstand/ jumping hoops they have to do to get anything approved, let alone built in this economically challenged town. There is a reason Lakewood continues to decline in both population and the incomes of its citizens.
And the ARB is just another blockade in moving this city forward again. They do far more damage than good.

Hey Hol... I agree. I really thought that Get Go would totally change our street and I am soo happy…Read More that it really hasen't. You are closer then I am but the noise and traffic has not seemed to change a whole lot. Bob Evans will also be our view and I am not thrilled that it will be right to the sidewalk but what can we do? I know we will be eating there just like we are always walking up to Get Go.... I just hope it survives and we are not looking at another abandoned building like we did with the old Giant Eagle for years..... I am also very glad that they took out those gas wells or whatever they where. Often times when my family was going for a walk or just playing outside we could smell them. I just want our quiet little piece of the world to stay that way. I LOVE this neighborhood! : )

Hi Jim,
Garish? What do you think of Hixson's next door? I mean, that building looks like it hasn't…Read More been touched/updated/renovated since the late 1970s! And its roof looks like it is going to cave in!
Obviously, you don't live on the East Side of town - empty storefronts, empty lots, rundown apartment buildings, houses in need of repair, etc. There is nothing charming on many blocks of the east side of Lakewood on both Madison, Detroit, Clifton, and the side streets. This side of town is on a very obvious economic decline. Lakewood for those of us on east side is not that walkable as there is no great shopping, no affordable restaurants, etc. Try walking with groceries from Giant Ego to Birdtown or to Cove and Clifton - not doable. Where are affordable family oriented restaurants on the east side of town?
There are blocks of far worse looking businesses all over Lakewood than the proposed BE. To not support a much needed business like BE because one doesn't like the "look" of it - reveals how clueless one can be about the changing Lakewood on the east side.
(btw, there is a new BE in University Heights, right across from the Whole Foods - it looks great and fits in nicely with that hood, which is not a suburban or off the ramp interstate area.)
Jim Smith June 11, 2013 at 11:29 pm
Wanting a business to conform to design standards is not "not supporting" them; it's…Read More asking THEM to support your community. I have no problem with Bob Evans, and plan to eat there when they open. So is it too much to ask to have them redirect their storefront design to reflect the community? Lots of communities to this, to great success--look at Hudson and Chagrin Falls. I know; you're thinking we're not either one of those communities. You're right, but that doesn't mean that we can't have our own standards, and make demands when a large chain decides to build a presence here. Why do you think this will chase Bob Evans away? They want to make money. They will. We want them to complement our community, not turn it into something it's not. And no matter what the east side of town looks like now, there's a lot of investment going on, because Lakewood has high population density, and its real estate is undervalued by comparison. The corporate folks WILL make their money--they pay their finance people a lot to make sure that will happen. We have a right to demand that, while they're here, to fit in with our community and develop it in a way that we determine. We are NOT at their mercy.
angelo June 17, 2013 at 09:22 am
Maybe I'm weird but I don't like every building looking the same as every other building. I think…Read More the most beautiful buildings that have been built in recent years are the library and Rosewood Place and they look completely different than everything around them. Driving down most of Detroit Avenue I see so much sameness that even new buildings are nondescript. A garish building like Bob Evens would be more than welcome by me in that huge empty wasteland that is Forest City's perpetually unfinished project project.
meituk June 10, 2013 at 12:26 pm
Wow! Sounds like an "original" idea for Lkwd....a bar with 8,ooo flat screen TV's, skee…Read More ball and assorted bar games. I wonder if they'll smash an outdoor patio into an inappropriately sized area behind the bar so that neighbors can enjoy some obnoxious drunks playing cornhole until 2:30am........SERIOUSLY?! I'm unimpressed!
Lakewood Resident June 14, 2013 at 11:42 am
A true sports bar was needed. Excited to catch a game there! Will be great to see some tv's on the…Read More patio. Also a much needed addition to the east side of town.
ian king June 15, 2013 at 11:53 pm
This is great news! Something besides a beer joint and a hamburger hamlet opening in downtown…Read More Lakewood. Luv your place in Ohio City! Congrats.
Now if we could just convince PEI WEI healthy Asian food -owned by PF Chang - to open in downtown Lakewood - the city would finally have some healthy, affordable, family friendly, senior friendly, and CLEAN Asian cuisine.
Peter Viiberg June 16, 2013 at 10:45 am
Ian buy a PEI WEI franchise and open one here. You can open in the old Red Rooster next to DrugMart.
CMW June 18, 2013 at 12:47 pm
Ian, actually, yes, Starbucks can stay in N.O. since they do nothing more than serve greatly…Read More overpriced, crappy coffee/beverages. And I would strongly suggest that you look over those menus again, they are not nearly as "healthy" as you seem to believe. For example B Evans fruit & yogurt plate, something most people would think is healthy right? Wrong! 348 Calories, 18g of fat and and a whopping 68g of sugar!! And don't even get me started on the level of sodium in most of their dishes, something that those with high blood pressure need to be conscious of, but probably don't even think about that when going out to eat.
ian king June 18, 2013 at 06:15 pm
hi cmw, strange comment! don't you know that liek 90% of all restaurant menus are mainly full of…Read More food prepared with lots of salt, lots of sugar, and lots of butter? i mean even wolfgang puck says if you go out to eat, you don't go out to count calories that night!
places like BE are just like every other restaurant with their use of salt, sugar, and butter - that is why everything tastes so much better in restaurants than in your own home. the difference, and it is a big one, is that i can a fresh salad (no dressing or on the side), a baked potato ( no butter or on the side), steamed broccoli, whole wheat toast ( no butter or on the side), and grilled chicken or fish. and have ice tea or water to drink. and all this is about as healthy as one can eat in a restaurant, and it will be very very affordable. in fact i can order at BE a $ 6.99 all i can eat of salad every day at lunch! i can't make it at home for that. so cmw, you are wrong about BE not offering healthy food options - they do everyday of the year!
ian king June 18, 2013 at 06:23 pm
Hi CMW,
i am amazed that you don't already know that most restaurants use lots of salt, sugar and…Read More butter in all their menu options. that is why restaurant food tastes so much better than your own cooking - it is full of salt, sugar and butter! even wolfgang puck says when you go out to eat, don't count calories!
what is wonderful about BE is the OPTION to eat healthy:
i can order a fresh salad, a baked potato, broccoli, grilled chicken or salmon, whole wheat bread, ice tea, and eat very healthy and very affordable to. and at breakfast, just order a side of cereal, oatmeal, or 2 eggs and whole wheat toast, and oj, and another healthy meal at BE. it is all about having a restaurant in town that offers healthy options and BE certainly does. all you have to do is think about what you are going to eat, and you will eat very healthy at BE.
ian king June 4, 2013 at 01:28 pm
shawn, crime is created by a human being. there is no color distinction for a criminal, or whether…Read More they look like me or not.
you seem to be injecting the issue of race into this blog. it is not race, period. it is the criminal element - thieves, drug addicts, robbers, muggers, prostitutes that exist/inhabit the 117th area of lakewood. yes, everyone i now is talking about how lakewood is changing. and a lot of folks i know have moved beyond bunts and left the east side of town. this is again, reality. until this city's mayor and elected officials become more proactive and really try to get new investments into the east side of town, the decline will continue. that is again, reality. and btw, i guarantee you that the far too frequent sound of police car sirons chasing down yet another criminal/crime around 117th and clifton/detroit/lake is not heard that often anywhere the west side of lakewood.
angelo June 4, 2013 at 03:50 pm
Ian I totally agree though I don't think it''s that bad yet. We also do have a number of things…Read More going for us on the East end. A lot of great live music in a number of venues. We also have the shining star which is Virginia Marti School of design and the part of the Forest City project that was completed as well as some unique and diverse restaurants. As I'm writing this Value World has a crane outside putting a new air conditioner on the roof. Thank God for that as Drug Mart's old one rattled all day and night. What upsets me the most is that giant hole that is Forest City's undeveloped lot. That and watching the jewel that was the Gold Coast allowed to turn into tenements. I'm happy for downtown and the West end of town but how can this city administrations's concern and efforts end at Bunts Road?
ian king June 7, 2013 at 11:45 am
hi angelo - wish i could agree, but check out the Patch's story today on the swat team action in…Read More birdtown. i don't ever recall anything like this before in lakewood - but then again, ask anyone and they will confirm the east side of Lakewood is clearly declining - and faster than one would have thought!

Well, I think the new mcdonalds and cvs are infinitely trashier than a second hand store. I live in…Read More western lakewood and would much rather see a second hand shop than the garbage popping up around me...i support reusing, recycling, and helping those in need; I am opposed to gmo food and junk food, corporate greed hurting communities, and every other store front in my 'downtown' being a cell phone provider...get a grip, thrift stores aren't the things hurting the community.
Christina Cocchiarale Ward September 15, 2012 at 02:11 am

Well I went to check out this new amazing grocery section, but could not find it, I did find a small…Read More cooler at the end of one isle and one non- refrigeranted shelf section with some fruits, onions and potatoes. Where is the fresh meat section and the incredible Deli, to be fair I did find a small cooler with some meat in it 6 packages of frozen Chicken, some hamburger meat and some pork loin this area is about 1/8 the sizes of Marc's meat coolers and the Deli is maybe 1/4 the size of Marc's. So one can't even compare DrugMart to Marcs and it grocery section. The old remodeled store has a better grocery section. Even the new Getgo has a larger and better grocery selection. Drugmart talked about how this is going to be their new flag ship store format, it does not look any different. As far as pricing yes DrugMart does offer weekly specials ( lost leader items) but most everything else is typical drug store pricing, you know small packages of product at a premium prices. You know what I mean like 6 pounds of cat food for $10 when you can buy 18 pounds for $12 any where else.
ian king June 8, 2013 at 09:32 am
well Peter, once again, I question your "reality". This is a nice medium size grocery…Read More store. It is not Marcs size but it is a whole lot larger than GetGo. There are multiple aisles with lots of product to choose from - much larger than the Detroit Ave store by the library. Are you sure you were in the NEW one by your hood? Btw, how is that noise problem you and your activist hood neighbors were so eager to complain about before the new DrugMart was even built? I think almost everyone thinks it looks very nice and after a few weeks of fine tuning, it is considered by most citizens of Lakewood a nice addition to our primary commercial - remember Peter, not residential - Detroit Ave.
Good job DrugMart!
ian king June 10, 2013 at 09:51 am
Peter, I am not sure I would compare their grocery section to Marc's. DrugMart is primarily that, a…Read More drug store. Marc's is primarily that , a grocery store. This new store has a nice selection of groceries and other items. It is not a Giant Ego or a Marc's, but is definitely larger than the one in downtown Detroit. And come on now Peter, comparing it to GetGo and stating that GetGo is larger! No way dude! It is what it is and I bet you some of the hood activists will be seen shopping there in a couple weeks. It is convenient for those quick trips to get a few basics. See ya there Peter!

Please note the comments new owners - "if it is done right". That is soooo important with…Read More Sushi. Having lived in the mother lode of Asian Food - San Francisco - it has been disappointing to find most Asian, Vietnamese, Pan-Asian restaurants sadly lacking in both quality, freshness, and taste here in NE Ohio. I wonder sometimes how the cooks could be so far off the mark! So WELCOME to Lakewood, and please be authentic and fresh and focus on quality - not so much quantity. If you can match the greatness of the Sushi restaurant KABUTO in San Francisco you will have the market in NE Ohio.
