Whiz Kids: Five Eagles Scouts Receive Proclamation From Mayor

All five scouts performed extensive volunteer work in the community to earn special distinction.

Each week, Lakewood Patch seeks suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments. We want to hear about these amazing children and teens and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid.

Submit your nomination in our comment box below or e-mail the information to colin.mcewen@patch.com. When making nominations, be sure to give us the type of information included in the following profile, which highlights this week's Whiz Kid.

Lakewood Patch Whiz Kids: Bob Zimmerman, Matt Michel, Jerry Koenigsmark and Nick Gliha — all high school seniors from Lakewood; and Erik Plumer, a freshman at Cleveland State University, from Parma.

Accomplishment: These young men all recently received the Eagle Scout honor. In order to earn the distinction, would-be Eagle Scouts are required to take part in a community-related volunteer project. They were all honored at a recent Lakewood City Council meeting for their efforts.

Key to awesomeness: Bob Zimmerman painted the entire outside of the VFW Post 10646 ; Erik Plumer performed miscellaneous repair work at the VFW and assisted serving meals to veterans; Matt Michel also pitched in to help at the VFW; Jerry Koenigsmark installed a fence at a transitional housing for the backyard for therapy dogs; and Nick Gliha refurbished a special shrine at his school.

"It’s a pretty remarkable achievement to have five eagle scouts at once,” said Mayor Michael Summers, who recently issued each scout with a prcolaimation recognizing their achievements. “I would say nobody becomes an eagle scout without a lot of support without the parents.”
