Soul Food Event Feeds the Hungry (And the Soul)

Third-annual event slated for Saturday at the Lake Erie Screw Factory.

Feed the hungry, feed the soul.

That’s part of the idea behind the annual Saturday night in Lakewood.

The other part of the plan is to have all kinds of fun.

The third-annual fundraising event, "Soul Food: Feed the Hungry, Feed the Soul," is slated to take place from 6:30 to 11 p.m. at the Lake Erie Screw Factory.

In year’s past, guests stayed late and danced an after party. So, this year, Soul Food organizers sought to make it official by bringing in soul-rock band We the People to perform until 11 p.m.

“We’re expecting a large crowd,” said organizer Jason Weiner. “We’re trying to capitalize on that and have a good time.”

The cost is $10, but that covers quite a bit: food, drinks, live music and access to the live auction.

“This has gotten so big,” Weiner said. “Every year, it doubles in size.”

What would a “soul” themed party be without some soulful entertainment? A soul-music dance-party will be provided by “local musician extraordinaire,” XeLa.

The event — presented by the — got its start two years ago to raise money for hunger relief for TLCO.

Last year, the event raised $5,000.

“We’re hoping to double that this year,” Weiner said.

“Lakewood is a town of people who are interested in helping out their neighbors. This event has become a way to connect with other people, with a passion for hunger relief.”

The event will also highlight local art.

“The event will also celebrate creativity, and provide a forum for artists to share their work with a theme of hunger relief.”

Proceeds from the event will benefit the four hot meals TLCO hosts, provide funds for the organization’s produce distribution, community gardens, pantry and health and wellness programs.

Founded in 2010, TLCO is the nonprofit community outreach arm of Trinity Lutheran Church with a mission to engage neighbors, create resources and connect individuals in support of a healthier community

The non-profit organization focuses on hunger relief and holistic health promotion.
