Relay For Life Making Its Return to Lakewood

The event, to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society, is set for June 16.

It’s been nine years since Lakewood’s had a Relay for Life event.

The drought is over.

The goal of the volunteer-driven event is to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society

Teams of volunteers — from local businesses, schools, churches and families — will take turns walking or running the track under the stars at Lakewood High School.

The last Lakewood Relay for Life event took place at St. Edward High School in 2003.

“It’s a shame that communities like Brooklyn, Parma and Independent had one, and Lakewood didn’t,” said Louis Wenner, chairman and organizer of the Lakewood Relay for Life.

For Wenner, it’s personal.

Both of his parents died of cancer before they were 60 years old.

“This is a passion,” he said. “I’ve participated in marathons for the past 17 years. I wanted to do something a little more difficult than a marathon. I’ve wanted to help raise money for the American Cancer Society — not that marathons are easy.”

Wenner said he’s set a personal goal of walking 60 miles at the event.

“I am dedicated to fulfilling my obligation to the donors,” he said. “I have made this commitment to walk 60 miles, and I am going to do it.”

He’s also looking to get others involved — including team captains, volunteers, cancer survivors, community leaders and sponsors.

“We’re talking with just about everyone we meet to form a team and get involved,” he said, adding that the money raised will benefit the American Cancer Society’s research, education, advocacy and patient service programs.

Those interested are encouraged to send Wenner an email.
