New Pastor Appointed to Lead St. James

Cleveland Diocese names priests at five of the 11 churches slated to reopen.

Nearly two years to the day after closed its doors on Detroit Avenue, the shuttered parish is slated to reopen.

With a new priest.

On Wednesday, the diocese announced that the Rev. Joseph Workman is the new pastor of St. James — effective July 23.

Rev. Workman, ordained in 2004, is currently the pastor of nearby on Madison Avenue.

It’s not yet clear whether the 39-year-old Workman will retain his post at St. Clement, sharing duties between the two parishes.

In a prepared statement, the diocese notes that Rev. Workman will set the date for the opening mass, however, the Sun Post-Herald reported that the re-opening will coincide with the Feast of St. James  — on July 25.

“Please join me in rejoicing with our brothers and sisters in faith during this blessed moment and pray for the success of these parishes in their mission to bring greater glory to God,” said Bishop Richard Lennon in the diocese's prepared statement.

The shuttered church on Detroit Avenue is after to close about a dozen parishes in Northeast Ohio.
