St. Edward Advances 10 Wrestlers to the State Tournament

Eagles dominate at district tournament in Lorain.

Like the Energizer rabbit, the 's wrestlers keep going, and going and going — all the way to Columbus.

The Eagles dominated the Lorain District tournament scoring 265 points, outpacing last years Division I state champion Wadsworth, by 32 points to win the district title. Brecksville was third with 130 points.

"This never gets old," St. Edward coach Greg Urbas said following the tournament. "Watching the kids work their tail off during the regular season, watching them compete at this level, in this district, it never gets old. This is a tough sport and they did a real fine job today."

Just how good was St. Ed's in the Lorain District, which some are saying could be tougher than the state meet itself?

In all ten Eagles advanced to state competition, with six claiming district crowns.

Edgar Bright (112), Dean Heil (119), Nick Barber (135), Mark Martin (152), Dominec Abounader (160) and Greg Kuhar (HVY) won titles while Markus Scheidel (125), Jacob Davis (171), James Suvak (189) and Ty Walz (215) finished second.

What was interesting though, was in final action the Eagles were only able to go 1-2 against Wadsworth, the team that ended their state title run last year.

"They are very very tough, as is Massilon Perry," Urbas said of Wadsworth. "Plus all the individuals who will be down there, so it's not just the two teams, so we have our hands full."

Heil, who upped his record to 22-2 on the year perhaps had the most impressive slate in district action for the Eagles as all his wins were either via tech fall or major decision.

Heil started the tourney off with a 16-0 tech fall over Springfield's Matt Stephenson.  He followed it up with yet another 16-0 tech fall, this time over Cloverleaf's Mark Heilman before earning a 9-1 major decision over Sylvania Northview's Brian Elden.

In the finals, he met cross-town rival Yousef Abdul Salem of Lakewood, and won his championship with a 17-1 tech fall.

Also having a nice tournament for the Eagles was Mark Martin at 152 pounds. Now 30-6 on the year, Martin won all his matches via pin, tech fall or major decision.

In his first match, he beat Garrett Paltz of St. Francis De Sales 18-3 and his second match saw him down Garrett Darby 20-5, both were tech falls. He followed that up with a 17-7 major decision over Brecksville's Andrew Barr.

In Martin's finale, he downed Westlake's Sheldon Stuckhart in 3:48 to earn his ticket to state.

The Eagles Colin Heffernan earned alternate status with his fifth place finish. In that match he downed Midview's Josh Ayers via major decision 17-4.
