St. Ed's Swimmers Finish in 15th Place at District

Junior Danny Herold places in top-12 in two events.

junior swimmer Danny Herold placed in the top 12 in two individual events to lead the Eagles to 15th place with 52 points at the Division I district swim meet Saturday afternoon at Cleveland State.

Herold had his best finish of the two with a seventh in the 100-yard back with a time of 55.33 seconds. The event also saw St  Edward junior Brennan Mitchell place 12th in 55.83.

Earlier in the day, Herold was 12th in the 200 individual medley with a clocking of 2:01.00 where he swam in the lane right next to Eagle sophomore teammate Will Ryan who was 28th in 2:08.34.

"We are little in numbers and young right now but the guys you see here today will be back," said St. Edward coach Jim Douglass. "We only lose one senior from this group, Jim McManis. The rest are underclassmen."

Also scoring individual points for the Eagles was diver Matt Ventura.

"Matt became cramped up during the competition and still missed going to the state by just three points," said Douglass. Ventura was 13th where 12 advance to the state meet in Canton.

Four other Eagles advanced out of the Division I sectional at Lakewood to the CSU district with freshman Grant Braid and junior Junior Samonte each in two events while junior Blake Strumbel and freshman Miguel Poblete swam in one each.

Braid finished 22nd in the 500 free with a 5:04.56 where Strumbel took 23rd in 5:06.70 to cut nearly 10 seconds from his seed time. Braid earlier placed 26th in the 200 free with a 1:52.30 while Samonte tied for 19th in the 100 fly in 55.99 and 20th in the 50 free at 22.59. Poblete was 26th in the 100 breast with a 1:04.75.

The Eagles also had two relays score with a ninth in the 200 medley relay and a 10th in the 200 free relay. St. Edward used Mitchell, Poblete, Herold and Samonte to a 1:40.89 in the 200 medley relay and Samonte, Mitchell, Herold and McManis to a 1:29.66 in the 200 free relay.
