Soccer Rivalry Ends With a Stalemate

Lakewood Community Cup will stay with Lakewood High School as cross-town matchup ends in a 0-0 tie Friday night.

All the excitement in Friday night’s soccer matchup between cross-town rivals and high schools ended with a stalemate at Coughlin Field.

The final score was 0-0.

Since the Rangers won last year’s contest, the Lakewood Community Cup will stay at Lakewood High School for at least another year.

With both schools’ solid records — Lakewood at 6-1-1 and St. Edward at 7-0-1 — there was heading into the contest.

“We didn’t play our best game,” said Lakewood coach Andy Toth. “It was a very fragmented game. About 25 minutes in, I was thinking this going to be a 0-0 game.”

“But, we get to keep the cup." 

The rivalry ended amicably enough. Following the game St. Edward coach Tony Dore walked over to the Rangers’ huddle to offer his encouragement for how well his cross-town rival performed.

“But both teams can walk away with something to learn from this game,” he said.
