Lakewood Swimmers Advance to District Tournament

Five individual Rangers and a relay team reach Division I district swimming and diving meet at Cleveland State.

The swim team advanced four individual swimmers and a diver along with a girls relay out of the Division I Lakewood sectional meet to this weekend's district meet at Cleveland State University's Robert Busbey Natatorium.

The Ranger girls have both sophomore Maddie Mahoney and freshman Sarah Neff moving on to the district while Lakewood also advances senior boys Brian Brink and Kyle Meggas along with junior diver Mike Pearlman.

Mahoney reaches the district in the 50 free where she was tied for fifth at Lakewood with a 26.11 along with Carly Brown of Strongsville and Jacquelyn Jarachovic of North Olmsted.

Mahoney, Brown and Jarachovic swam again after the sectional meet concluded. Mahoney and Brown tied again at 26.03 before Brown won a third swim with a 25.65 to Mahoney's 25.81.

Many joked on the pool deck that and his son, Strongsville coach Tom Stacy, would have to swim against each other and save Mahoney and Brown another trip in the water if they tied once more.

The Lakewood sophomore will also swim the 100 fly in the CSU district after finishing sixth in the sectional with a 1:03.87.

Neff goes to the district in the 200 free with her fifth place finish in the sectional in a time of 2:04.09. She also reaches the district with a sectional time of 5:30.43 in the 500 free where she placed fifth.

The Lakewood girls also reached the district in the 200 medley relay after placing fifth with a 1:57.27 with seniors Ellen Schleckman and Amanda Dreistadt joining Neff and Mahoney.

Brink goes to CSU in both sprint events, placing sixth in both the 50 free and 100 free. The Ranger senior had a 23.02 in the 50 free and followed that with a 50.73 in the 100 to earn at-large spots in each event at Cleveland State.

Meggas, who reached the Division I district meet last season in the 200 free and 500 free, returns to the districts this year in the 200 free. The Lakewood senior finished seventh in the sectional at his home pool with a time of 1:54.04. His 5:16.85 in the 500 free placed him 11th in the sectional and was just short of repeating as a district qualifier in that event at Cleveland State.

Pearlman qualified for the district diving meet with a fifth place with 394.05 points in the sectional which took place earlier last week at Solon High School.
