Lakewood Girls Rugby Team Wins State Title

The Lady Rangers beat St. Joe's, 20-5, to win the state championship.

The second-best girls rugby team in the nation, is now (officially) the best squad in Ohio.

That's after the girls rugby team knocked off powerhouse St. Joe's over the weekend.

The Lady Rangers won the contest, 20-5.

That comes on the heels of match in California two weeks ago.

The girls had a lot of fight this season.

Team members have been working for months to raise money for their trip to California to compete in the tournament.

And earlier this year, the girls helped to introduce a bill in the Ohio Statehouse that , lobbying elected officials to change the laws on the books regarding physical education requirements.

In a recent letter to the editor, coach Andre Bruwer said his squad just doesn't give up. 

"I am super proud of what our girls have done and their achievements deserve praise from all corners, they have worked from September through May in rain and snow, they have braved the elements and conquered many more hurdles than I would care to mention," Bruwer said.
