St. Edward Lineman Remains Committed to Ohio State

Kalis among top recruits for embattled Buckeyes

For much of the last year, lineman Kyle Kalis has planned to play football at Ohio State in the fall of 2012. After months of speculation and scandals, and even after the recent and sudden resignation of coach Jim Tressel amid NCAA investigations, Kalis still plans to move to Columbus and play for the Buckeyes.

For now, at least.

According to a report Tuesday in the Lancaster Eagle Gazette, Kalis is “upset by the news” of Tressel’s resignation, though his mother declined to comment on how it would affect his recruitment, or whether he plans to open himself to another round of recruitment this late in the process.

Other top Ohio State recruits, including St. Ignatius tight end Blake Thomas, Columbus St. Francis DeSales running back Warren Ball and Canton GlenOak running back Bri’onte Dunn, all said they remain committed to the Buckeyes through this period of upheaval and uncertainty, according to a report on ESPN.com.

Kalis did talk with The Wall Street Journal for a report published Tuesday about whether college athletes should receive compensation beyond their scholarship. While other college athletes said they should be paid anywhere from $2,000 to $200,000 per year, Kalis said salaries would prove a negative because athletes would simply purchase “more stuff they can get in trouble with.”

Kalis, who measures in at 6-foot-5 and 310 pounds, is ranked 18th overall and fourth among offensive lineman in his class by Rivals.com. He is the son of former NFL lineman Todd Kalis, who played eight seasons for the Minnesota Vikings, Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals, and is currently the president of the Pittsburgh Chapter of NFL Alumni.
