Preliminary Results Are In: Lakewood Schools Earn 'Effective' Rating

After reviewing the initial data sent by the Ohio Department of Education, it appears Lakewood's students collectively received an above-average performance rating in 2010-11.

The state report cards won't be released for another couple of weeks, but Superintendent Jeff Patterson said it appears the Lakewood City Schools will earn an “effective” rating.

Last week, the district received preliminary results that indicate its students collectively performed at an above-average level during the 2010-11 school year, Patterson said.

For reference, the rankings – from best to worst – range from excellent, effective and continuous improvement, and move downward to academic watch and academic emergency.

Starting in the 2007-08 school year, Lakewood attained an effective rating. In 2008-09 the district hit excellent, but then dropped two notches to continuous improvement the following year.

Given the initial Ohio Department of Education data, it appears the district has moved up one slot in the rankings since the 2009-10 school year, Patterson said.

”We feel good that we’ve – at least at this point in time – improved our ranking,” he said. “But as you tear into the data, and you look specifically at it, that tells more of the story in terms of your improvement efforts.

“And, I think, that once we get the opportunity to do that, we’re going to see that we made some significant gains.”

Patterson expects to receive and announce the final results by the end of August.
