Lakewood Schools Granted $50 Million for Construction, Renovation Project

District will need to ask voters for a bond issue to receive funding

Lakewood City Schools announced that it was awarded $50 million to construct three new elementary schools and renovate the high school, they announced today.

The money, along with a bond issue that the district will ask voters to approve, will help the district pay to rebuild three elementary schools and renovate the high school.
At a cost of around $79 million.

The district has been waiting for the money since 2007, but in May received a letter from the state that gave them a "glimmer of hope" that they would be approved for the funding.

And, last month, the board decided to move forward with the $79 million project.

School officials have said that once the district gets the go-ahead, it would need to place a bond issue before voters and that it could be as soon as this November’s ballot.

The Ohio School Facilities Committee requires that the district raise the remaining $25 million in local funding in order to receive the $50 million.
