Ohio State's Tribute to Video Games, Halftime Controversy, and the Lakewood Marching Band

The Ohio State Marching Band's amazing tribute to video games, Nebraska's disrespect to Script Ohio, and Lakewood High School's Band performs at the Skull Session.

Even if you normally skip watching the marching band perform at halftime, you should check out this video of the Ohio State Marching Band's (aka The Best Damn Band in the Land) tribute to video games - it is amazing! (The galloping horse from Zelda at 6:00 is flat-out incredible.) The band performs re-enactments of scenes from Zelda, Halo, Pokemon, Tetris, and other classics.

After the brilliant video game performance which got a loud, enthusiastic reaction unlike anything I've ever heard in the Horseshoe, the band launched into the traditional Script Ohio. In contrast to the loud cheering and applause for the previous performance, the crowd booed and yelled more than I've ever heard when Nebraska kickers Brett Maher and Mauro Bondi ran on to the field during Script Ohio to practice field goals (see video).

In all my years of watching Ohio State football and college football in general, I've never seen a team practice kicking on the field during a halftime performance.

In addition, the Nebraska kickers were in violation of  the College Band Directors National Association's College and University Athletic Band Guidelines, (see page 3):

Performance Area

The football field should be clear of non-band personnel, props, or other obstructions not related to the marching band show while the show is underway.

It was pretty clear that this blatant act of disrespect was intentional. However, it only seemed to inspire the Buckeyes to beat the Corn Huskers in a big way - 63-38.

Lakewood's Marching Band was at the game also. They performed at the Skull Session - the band concert/pep rally before the game. A real honor for the Rangers.
