New Plans for Heideloff Property Proposed

So far, the plans are only preliminary, but they include a new stone-and-brick structure north of the existing home.

The Edgewater Drive home that’s made lots of headlines during the past year is again a topic of discussion.

The owners of the Heideloff estate are looking to build a second home on the 2.5-acre piece of land at 13474 Edgewater Drive.

Earlier this year, the city’s planning commission denied a request to make the home a “historic landmark” under the city’s ordinance.

At the center of the debate was the issue of private property rights versus historic preservation. The neighbors, not the property owners, submitted the paperwork to make the mansion a historic landmark.

At the end of it all, the homeowners decided not to demolish the existing home.

At a special meeting at city hall on Thursday, the city’s architectural board of review had a look at the new plans presented by architect Mark Reinhold.

“(The owners) have a legal right to tear the house down, but they don’t want to do that,” Reinhold said.

So far, the plans are only preliminary — but they include a new stone-and-brick home.

“There’s only so much that I can ask and present to you right now,” Reinhold told the board.

The city won’t likely review the official designs until September.

However, the new home would be built near the lake, north of the exiting home.

Carl Orban, the acting chairman of the ABR, pointed out that the passers-by wouldn’t even see the house from the neighborhood.

“You might see the roofline, but nothing much else,” he said.
