McGinty’s Reopening in Church Bar Location

Church Bar closes last month, and Pat McGinty and company took the keys back, and are set to open on Friday.

The bar at Madison Avenue and Bunts Road that was McGinty’s, then the Church Bar, will be McGinty’s once again.

It’s opening on Friday.

Originally operated by Pat McGinty — who also owns the successful Plank Road Tavern on Detroit Avenue — the business changed hands in 2005. Several years later, the bar became the Church Bar.

Brion Stenger, one of the four owners of McGinty’s, said that the owners of the Church Bar offered to sell it back to McGinty and his partners.

They took the keys on Jan. 1, just weeks after the Church Bar closed.

Since then, the interior has undergone a facelift, including new floors, lights and paints and décor.

“It’s going to be an Irish pub theme,” said Stenger.

That’s good news for the East End of Madison Avenue, which saw Sullivan’s Irish Pub close its doors last year.

McGinty’s will feature $3 Guinness beer — all the time — and some Irish music.

There’s no kitchen, but there are plans in the works to serve food.

Sad to learn CHURCH BAR has closed. One of the very few hip, urban, big city atmosphere bars in NE Ohio. Great decor, great neighborhood vibe, good music - sad to see it gone. Why is it with NE Ohio and its inability to sustain bars that are more similar to what one will find in NYC, Chicago, SF, LA? The "hip" factor of this are is sorely lacking and with the closing of CHURCH BAR, another 21st century drinking environment is gone.

I agree with the previous comment. Church Bar had a great atmosphere and vibe, and it was something different. McGinty's had the same feel as many of the bars in Lakewood, even if they do not necessarily call themselves "Irish Pubs". Lakewood is in need of diversity in it's bar scene and Church Bar provided a bit of that. It's a shame that it will be an Irish Pub again.

I agree with both the comments above. When I saw the green paint going on outside I shuddered, and as if that wasn't bad enough, then I learned it was just an old bar coming back. (big bellies and beer) There seems to be a cultural tug in as much as the old school thinking prevails, and progressive thinking struggles, like it's one step forward and 3 steps back.

I'm excited to see the new place tonight! I love the laid-back, comfortable atmosphere of Irish pubs.
