Veterans Honor Fallen Heroes at Lakewood Park Cemetery

Lakewood city officials, judges, police officers and fire fighters joined the Memorial Day parade that took participants and onlookers from Rocky River High School to Lakewood Park Cemetery.

The Joint Veterans Council of Lakewood and Rocky River held a on Monday morning to honor those who fell while defending America's principles and freedoms over the last 200 years. 

Participants and onlookers stepped off at Rocky River High School at 10:30 a.m. and reached Lakewood Park Cemetery by 11:15 a.m. to hear the opening remarks of Mike Blakesmith – this year's master of ceremonies who currently serves in the Ohio Military Reserves in Highland Hills.

Blakesmith then introduced Gil Fritzsche, a Vietnam war veteran and former marine who spoke about the ultimate sacrifices of so many service men and women that have contributed to America's ability to survive as a free nation.

Lakewood city officials, judges, police men and women and fire fighters, along with veterans and area families were in attendance.

To conclude the ceremony, a wreath was placed at the cemetery's flagpole, followed by a 21-gun salute.
