Kaptur Wins 9th Congressional District

Kucinich does well in Cuyahoga County, but Kaptur takes the votes on the rest of the North Coast.

A strong showing in Cuyahoga County for U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich wasn't enough to beat U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur in the race for the newly configured 9th Congressional district on Tuesday.

With nearly all of the precincts counted around the North Coast, the Toledo Democrat defeated challenger Kucinich by roughly 11,000 votes, according to unofficial election results.

Kucinich conceded the contest at around midnight at Rubin's Deli in Cleveland.

This Democratic primary for the new 9th Congressional district shaped up to be a battle among the two veteran Democrats and political newcomer, Graham Veysey.

As expected, the votes at western edge of the district — Kaptur's base near Toledo — came in heavy for her.

In Lucas County, she got 18,984 votes, compared with Kucinich's 736.

In Lorain County, Kaptur won by 4,004 votes. In Erie County, Kucinich lost by 4,005 votes.

In Ottawa County, Kaptur won by more than 1,500 votes.

However, in Cuyahoga County, Kucinich won by more than 15,000 votes, according to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.

But it wasn't enough to overcome the support Kaptur received in the counties to the west.

Kaptur issued a statement to the media at around 1 a.m., thanking Veysey for his "energy and enthusiasm" and Kucinich for his "spirited debate."

"We will need them and their supporters' help to work for the betterment of all of northern Ohio," she said.

Republicans  this year and put the political veterans in the same district, stretching 100 miles along Lake Erie from Cleveland to Toledo.

"We knew full well that redistricting was going to impose some challenges," said Kucinich shortly after he conceded at Rubin's Deli in Cleveland on Tuesday night. "We understood at the beginning that we were at a disadvantage. But we made every effort to win."

He said Kaptur ran an advertising campign in the Cleveland-area that was "utterly lacking in integrity."

"I don't think the people in Toledo have any idea the kind of campaign she ran here," Kucinich added.

"Don't cry any tears for me."

Polls leading up to Election Day showed the long-time Congressional veterans in a dead heat.

All three candidates made stops around the North Shore on Tuesday.

Kaptur was up early, making stops at the in Lakewood at 8:30 a.m., before heading west to her home base in Toledo.

Kucinich made several stops around the new 9th District, too.

Veysey had crews of supporters at polling stations across the North Coast.

In a prepared statement, Veysey said that he reached out to Kaptur to congratulate her on the victory.

"We didn't win in the vote count, but we won by changing the conversation and getting two incumbents to talk about the issues that matter," Veysey said in the statement. "We are around to fight another day and will continue to challenge the status quo."

We need to remember that as long as we keep voting in the same career politicians nothing is going to improve in Congress. Public service was never intended to be a career - one provides their service, then goes home to conitnue their regular career. Its the old "throw the bums out, but not MY bum" mentality.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out, Dennis. Let's convert his lakewood office to something useful.

The lead of this story indicates Marcy Kaptur has WON the 9th Congressional district while in reality it was a PRIMARY. And while chances are strong the democrat will go on to win in November, this was still a primary and not shown in the lead....

Although the election is not official yet we do live in northern Ohio and if Joe the Plumber wins this seat in November I would call for an election fraud investigation myself.

Where is Storer...East, West, or South of Lakewood?
Regina Milsaps June 18, 2013 at 04:26 pm
It runs east from West 67th to West 34th between Clark to the North and Denison to the South. ButRead More you could look it up on Google maps for a better idea of just how far it is from West 117th and Madison.

Casaderayray, Storer is east of Lakewood, west of W. 25th, south of Ohio City. The heading was "just outside of Lakewood" due to the fact that I have other listings much farther out, like Painesville and Euclid. They are supposed to be reopening in early July as Brew 211, as sports bar with a lot of large flatRead More TVs and basic bar food. The big wood booths are leaving. Sullivan's as we knew it is gone.

Again, while I am very grateful for the outcome for my Mom, I also have a lot of compassion for theRead More other residents. The move for my Mom is only temporary, since the South Westerly will come under the same guidelines within a couple of years. This can only be changed by an act of Congress. I have already written letters to the politicians involved, particularly Marcy Kaptur -- Ohio Congressional District 9. Hopefully, all concerned will do the same.
Duane Hoyt June 7, 2013 at 08:25 am
Marcy doesn't care about Lakewood. Dennis Kucinich wouldn't allow this to happen, but thanks toRead More Republican (Kasich) redistricting, Dennis had to run against Marcy, and he lost. Remember this when Kasich runs against local Lakewood man Ed Fitzgerald runs for Governor.
Ron Dodson June 8, 2013 at 07:10 pm
Members of Congress tack on amendments to bills all the time that only benefit a handful of theirRead More constituents. If there was ever a time for a pork barrel move, this would be it. You're right Duane, this would have never gotten this far if Dennis was still next door to the Westerly.
