New Rubber Roof OK'd in Place of St. Gregory's Gold Dome

The city's architectural board of review approved a new rubber roof at the former church.

It wasn’t the way the city of Lakewood would’ve liked it to be handled, but the gold dome has been removed from St. Gregory church on Quail Street.

And last week, the city’s architectural board of review approved a new rubber roof at the former church.

The measure was approved with the stipulation that the building’s owners build a “four-sided cap to match the pitch of the current roof.”

“We would have preferred them to mention something to us before they took (the dome) down,” said Bryce Sylvester, the city planner for Lakewood.

After the dome was removed from the former St. Gregory church on Quail Street in June — against the city’s wishes — a few neighbors are concerned about the property.

Among them are the building’s safety and security.

One neighbor told Lakewood Patch that there are reports that the building “was open to the elements,” and the ceiling is unstable, creating a moldy situation.

Building department officials were expected to follow up on the property.

The future of the property — and its next use — remains unclear.
