Man Sentenced to 11 Years in Prison for Attempted Murder

His mother awaits sentencing for trying to cover for him.

A 45-year-old  in the head at her Lakewood apartment after she broke up with him in April was sentenced to 11 years in prison for trying to kill her.

Robert Doss faced 13 years in prison — including a mandatory three-year prison because a gun was used in the crime — after he to a charge of attempted murder.

Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Hollie Gallagher handed down his sentence Friday.

The charges stem from a . Doss shot his ex-girlfriend, once behind her left ear in an apartment at 13531 Detroit Avenue.

His mother, Barbara Doss, 63, who lived in the same apartment building as the 39-year-old victim, faces one year in prison for covering for him. Her sentencing is set for Sept. 19.

Four months after the shooting, the victim is still recovering from a single gunshot to the head, said Ryan Miday, the spokesman for the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office.

The bullet entered through her left ear and exited just beneath her eye, leaving her deaf and blind on the left side of her face, he said.

“She was breaking off a relationship with him and (he) became enraged,” Miday said. “At her residence, she thought he was going to punch her and turned away from him. He shot her in the back of the ear.”

The victim was found by emergency rescue crews on the floor of the apartment. She was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center, but was able to identify Doss on her way to the hospital.
