His mother, Barbara Doss, who lived in the same apartment building as the 39-year-old victim, faces one year in prison. Her sentencing is set for Sept. 19.

Four months after the shooting, the victim is still recovering from a single gunshot to the head, said Ryan Miday, the spokesman for the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office.

“She was breaking off a relationship with him and (he) became enraged,” Miday said. “At her residence, she thought he was going to punch her and turned away from him. He shot her in the back of the ear.”

The victim was found by emergency rescue crews on the floor of the apartment. She was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center, but was able to identify Doss on her way to the hospital.
