LOOK: American Red Cross Delivers Meals to Lakewood Seniors

Hundreds of meals delivered Tuesday to Gold Coast apartment complexes; more meals to be served at city's "emergency reception center" on Madison Avenue.

The American Red Cross arrived in Lakewood to deliver hundreds of meals to the city’s seniors who were left in the dark Tuesday evening.

The relief organization made a couple of stops in the city’s Gold Coast neighborhood: Lake Shore Towers and Marine Towers East.

Both buildings — with a high concentration of senior citizens — were left without power.

Mayor Michael Summers was one of several volunteers running boxes of food to hungry residents.

“Some of these residents are nervous and vulnerable,” he said, adding that they are welcome to head to the city’s “emergency reception center” at the Lawther Senior Center on Madison Avenue if the power is still out on Wednesday.

The lobby of the Lake Shore Tower — powered with a back-up generator — was crowded with seniors. They waited in line to get a meal.

Summers said there were some Tuesday evening.

The Illuminating Company has reported that the outages are expected to continue as crews work “around the clock” to restore power.
