Lakewood Stats Available on Detailed New York Times Census Map

When the latest U.S. Census figures were released, we learned four key things about Lakewood:

  1. Lakewood stayed just above the required 50,000-resident mark needed to remain a federally-funded "Entitlement Community," meaning the city will continue receiving Community Development Block Grants. 
  2. The black population in Lakewood has tripled. In 2000, there were 1,116 blacks in the city, compared with 3,340 in 2010.
  3. More than a third, 39 percent, of people with Hispanic heritage in Lakewood are 19 or younger, while 30 percent of blacks are 19 or under, and 26 percent of the Asian population is 19 or under.
  4. With about 57 percent of the city’s total households renting, Lakewood is a renter’s town.
