Lakewood Opening ‘Emergency Reception Center’
Estimated 12,000 households without power; many could be without power through the rest of the week. Red Cross assisting the city to deliver hot meals to seniors.
With an estimated 12,000 homes without power following the hurricane that swept through the area, the city of Lakewood is opening an “emergency reception center” for affected residents.
Starting at 8 a.m. Wednesday, the city will use the Lawther Senior Center at 16024 Madison Avenue to assist residents “in need of a warm place to spend the day.”
Mayor Michael Summers said city officials considered opening a gym for residents to sleep in, but decided residents would be “better off and more comfortable” in their homes.

However, he’s encouraging residents to check in on elderly friends, family and neighbors who might need some additional help.
Among the power outages, are several high-rise apartment complexes in the Gold Coast neighborhood — where there’s a concentration of senior citizens.

The Illuminating Company has reported that the outages are expected to continue as crews work “around the clock” to restore power.
