Lakewood Adds Another Street to Paving Project After Bids Come in Low

City set to repave seven streets this summer.

Summer might seem like a long time away right now, but for city officials planning to repave seven Lakewood streets, it’s right around the corner.

Bids came back lower than expected for this summer's street-paving project — and that means that can add another street to the plans.

The city originally had six streets included in the project. Some streets will be paved entirely, while others will have only a portion repaved.

On Wednesday, when the bids came in $200,000 under the $1.2 million estimate, the city added Granger Avenue to the project.

Joe Beno, Lakewood’s director of public works, said the cost of the project includes asphalt, labor and plans.

How many streets the city is able to pave "depends on finances" each year, said Beno, who pointed out that last summer there were only a couple. The year before that, there were more than 10.

"We'd love to have $2 million each year to pave the streets," he said. "We take what we're able to do and pick what we think are the worst streets."
