Heritage Advisory Board to Cover Historic Preservation Ordinance

The law on the books since 2008 has come up a few times in the past year. The public meeting is set to take place at the University of Akron Lakewood campus on Thursday.

Given the planning commission’s recent decision regarding the Heideloff property, it’s just good timing that the city’s heritage advisory board will revisit the Historic Preservation Ordinance at its meeting on Thursday.

The law on the books since 2008 has come up a few times during the past year.

A recent attempt by neighbors of the home at 13474 Edgewater Drive to make the property a historic landmark was overruled by the commission in a split vote.

It would have been the first residential property in the city with the designation, and the fourth overall. The others are St. James Catholic Church, the Oldest Stone House and the .

The neighbors have appealed the planning commission’s decision.

The regularly scheduled heritage advisory board meeting is slated to take place at the University of Akron Lakewood campus at 6 p.m. Thursday.

“It's timely,” said Ward 2 councilman Tom Bullock, who’s planning to attend the meeting. “Yet historic preservation goes beyond the consideration of individual properties to include neighborhoods and districts.”

“What role can historic preservation play in our continued care for Lakewood's housing stock? This meeting offers an opportunity to learn.”

Rick Sicha, chairman of the city’s Heritage Advisory Board, is expected to discuss how the Historic Preservation Ordinance brings recognition to Lakewood’s buildings and neighborhoods and helps to retain the distinctive features of Lakewood’s building stock.

Also on the agenda, the group will discuss the recently released map showing construction by decade in Lakewood, as well as the update from the 2013 Community Vision.
