Fourth of July Fireworks Back on at Lakewood Park

Last year's Fourth of July fireworks show at Lakewood Park was cancelled, leaving thousands in attendance in the dark.

Perhaps nobody in Lakewood is more nervous about this year’s Fourth of July show than Mayor Michael Summers. 

That’s because last year’s show at Lakewood Park — described my many as a sort of epic disaster when the fireworks failed to go off — was cancelled, leaving tens of thousands in attendance in the dark.

“I’ll be as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rockers,” said Summers. “If those fireworks don’t go off I will be on a rail on my way out of town — tarred and feathered.”

This year’s show — provided by the same company — is at no cost to the city.

That’s a cost-savings of $32,000.

“More importantly, we’ve stepped up our communications strategy. We can’t really on cell phones — because the towers jam up.”

The city is also planting phone landlines at the pool and posting speakers, facing south.
