Anderson’s résumé reveals years of public service: He has served in the office of US Sen. Howard Metzenbaum, he was the director of the International Children’s Fund and — most recently — the deputy director of City Year Cleveland.

“My work with Senator Metzenbaum showed me that government can work for people,” Anderson said. “Watching Councilman (Kevin) Butler get problems solved (in Ward 1) reminded me that local government can help people solve their problems.”

The 43-year-old native of suburban Atlanta said he plans to continue the work of his predecessor on council.

“I know that budget and finances are going to be a struggle over the next few years,” he said. “The housing stock needs to be addressed — I think the current administration is doing a good job. Honestly, I want Lakewood to be a safe place to live, recreate and raise a family.”

There were more than 13 applicants for the post — which is set to expire at the end of this year along with the other ward seats.

The other candidates were: Patrick Ballasch; Cynthia Bender; Timothy Carroll; David G. Clifford; Robert Dumbrys; James Gepperth; J. Patrick Lang; Luke J. Madden; Pat Metzger; Brian Mooney; Bryan Rosser; and Cheryl F. Sullivan.

“As usual, it was a talented, smart group of people who applied,” said council vice president Mary Louise Madigan. “David brings a great combination of business and government experience that will allow him to hit the ground running, which is what the people of Ward 1 are used to with Kevin.”

“But, I want to make it clear that there's no shortage of talent in Ward 1, or Lakewood for that matter. We've been thrilled with the applicants for the recent council vacancies and the board and commissions.”

The Ward 1 position opened when Mayor Michael Summers appointed Councilman (and council president) Butler . Council also decided to make that appointment official at its special Monday meeting.

Council will select its newest president at its March 7 meeting.
