For about 85 years, the bell tower at St. Peter Episcopal Church was empty.
The church finally got its bell in November. A 2,000-pound, 5-foot-high bell now hangs in the church’s belfry at 18001 Detroit Avenue.
And it rings in the key of A-flat.
On Monday night, Lakewood City Council approved a resolution signifying the bell’s installation.
Ken Taylor, a member of St. Peter, attended the council meeting with several other members of the congregation
“It’s really a nice projection for our congregation and it’s an import religious signal — a call to worship.”
Built in 1927, church members had originally intended to install the bell, but those plans were put on hold during the Great Depression.
The belfry was empty for more than 85 years until members of the congregation raised the money — with the help from a substantial anonymous donation — to have a bell installed in November.
