CIty Council Tonight: Library's Public Art Project and Consumption of Alcohol in Public

Lakewood council to vote a number of issues at tonight's meeting.

Among the topics set for discussion at tonight's city council meeting are the plans for the Lakewood Public Library's and the at public events and outdoor dining.

Both issues were raised at the last council meeting earlier this month.

Earlier this year, the library announced that it had received 202 submissions from around the country for an "iconic" sculpture to be erected on the library's front lawn this fall.

Council is set to vote on an issue that would give the library's board of trustees an exemption from the code to place a sculpture in the right-of-way next to the building.

Also, in a second reading,  will decide a proposal that would bring the code up to date with current legislation that allows the sale of alcohol in public places.

Under the current law, businesses and organizations must obtain special permits to serve alcohol. But under the city’s criminal code, drinking in public is forbidden.

The proposed ordinance would officially allow drinking with a special event permit or a conditional use permit for outdoor dining.
