Police Warn of Scammer Using Diabetes Fundraiser to Swindle Residents

Get a call from someone claiming to represent the Diabetes Partnership? Call them. Or call Lakewood police.

The is warning residents about a scam that involves people soliciting money for the upcoming Swim for Diabetes fundraiser.

is a legitimate fundraising event to raise money for the Diabetes Partnership of Cleveland — set to take place at the from April 20 through April 22.

But police are cautioning residents to double-check the solicitations.

“We received information from Diabetes Partnership of Cleveland that (people) may be soliciting area homes and businesses for their Swim for Diabetes event who are not authorized by the charity,” said Capt. Ed Hassing. “It is suggested that persons who receive solicitations check with the charity before donating.”

It's not known how many victims there have been so far.
