Police Make Heroin Bust Following Traffic Stop

Cleveland man charged after he runs from police, caught 20 minutes later with drugs and money.

Lakewood police arrested two Cleveland residents and seized an estimated $3,000 worth of heroin along with $2,000 in cash following a traffic stop last Friday.

Here’s how it went down:

Capt. Ed Hassing said that an officer attempted to stop a vehicle at the intersection of Summit and Detroit avenues after its driver ran a red light at around 1:30 p.m. Aug. 12.

When the vehicle came to a stop, the passenger in the vehicle took off on foot, Hassing said. The driver of the vehicle, a 23-year-old woman, appeared to have been smoking marijuana at the time of the traffic infraction, he said.

The city’s K-9 unit was called to search for the man. About 20 minutes later, officers found the 31-year-old man hiding in the bushes of a Brockley Avenue home.

They also found that he had $2,000 and 24 bundles of heroin — each containing 10 packs of the narcotic.

Hassing estimated the street value of the drugs at around $3,000.

The man was charged with felony drug trafficking and obstructing official business, a misdemeanor. The woman was charged with the traffic offense and child endangering, stemming from the fact that there was a young child in the vehicle, Hassing said.

“We’ve got that much more drugs off the street,” he said. “Traffic stops can lead to a lot of other things — they run into all kinds of things during traffic stops.”
