Man Killed In Atkins Avenue Fire This Morning

Identity of 53-Year-Old Man not Released

A 53-year-old Lakewood man was killed this morning in a fire at 2134 Atkins Avenue. The man’s name has not yet been released

Lakewood Fire Chief Scot Gilman said his department received a call at approximately 6:30 a.m.

The fire was under control in less than 5 minutes and was contained to one corner of a bedroom in the back of the house. The victim was transported to Lakewood Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:20 a.m.

Gilman said the house had a smoke detector present but the battery was disconnected.

“People need working smoke detectors and a plan to get out,” he said.

The cause of death has not yet been released and the fire remains under investigation.

Gilman said three ambulances responded in addition to the fire truck and 24 fire personnel. The Westlake Fire Department is assisting with the investigation.
