Lakewood Police Investigating Check Scams

The following arrest information was supplied by the Lakewood Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Lakewood police are investigating several reports of a check scam, reported by a few residents on April 3.

The cases all have similar themes.

A woman in the 2100 block of Overbrook Avenue told police April 3 that a man called her claiming to be from a banking association and said that someone was trying to cash checks in her name.

Minutes later, a resident in the 2300 block of Niagara Drive told police that she received a call from someone claiming to be from the police department. He said if she didn’t share her checking information, he would “send officers to her house.”

She hung up and called Lakewood Police.

Similar incidents were reported in the 17000 block of Madison Avenue and in the 2000 block of Ferndale Avenue — both during the afternoon of April 3.

Police are investigating.

Drug abuse

A man was charged with disorderly conduct and drug abuse after police stopped him in the 16400 block of Detroit Avenue at around 2:30 a.m. March 30. 

Theft

A laptop computer was reported stolen from an unlocked vehicle in the 15100 block of Arden Avenue at around 12:30 p.m. March 30.

Grand theft

A car was reported stolen from the 2200 block of Warren Road at around 5:30 p.m. March 31. The keys had been left in the vehicle.

Wrong place to pee

A man got out of his vehicle in the 2200 block of Eldred Avenue at around 12:10 a.m. April 1, urinated on a resident’s yard, then got back in his car and drove away.

Man to face drug charges

A man faces a several charges following a traffic stop near the intersection of Plover and Quail streets at around 1:30 a.m. April 1. The charges include receiving stolen property and an arrest warrant for drug paraphernalia and possession of a hypodermic needle. 

Shoplifting

A man was arrested and charged with shoplifting from the CVS Pharmacy on Clifton Boulevard at around 9:30 p.m. April 1.
