Barbara Stepanek, the administrator for the Westerly Apartments, said other residents in the building were not evacuated.

“It was a good outcome,” she said. “(The firefighters) showed up fast. They came immediately.”

Firefighers had to remove the window of the eighth-floor apartment to allow the smoke to escape.

There was no damage to any of the other apartments. In fact, Stepanek said in her 29 years at the Westerly, there’s never been a fire that’s escaped any of the apartments.

“The building was very well built,” she said.

According to fire officials, departments from Fairview, Rocky River, Westlake and Bay Village responded to the blaze — along with several squads from Lakewood.
