Government Funds=Immoral Eviction from the Westerly in Lakewood

My 84 year old Mom has lived 20 some years at The Westerly in Lakewood. She recently received an eviction notice to move by August because The Westerly is seeking government funds for updates and repairs from H.U.D. and LIHTC (Low Income Housing Tax Credit). While guidelines state that anyone earning over $24,000 is ineligible to live there, these guidelines are forcing 30+ seniors to uproot their homes and cause undue suffering as they lose services they need and are accustomed to and losing long time friendships that have evolved. Because her income is less than $2,000 over the eligible guidelines, she will be forced to live in other accommodations that do not have the services she has relied on. My Mom worked hard at minimum wage jobs all her life. We came here as immigrants because she believed in the American dream for our family. She never took aid or handouts from anyone. Her income comes from two pensions and Social Security. She lived frugally. As a single Mom and without financial assistance from my Dad, she did her best to raise my sister and I, here in Lakewood, where we grew up and where we finished high school. At this time of her life, she has mild dementia. My sister and I take good care of her with the help of a few paid "angels" who stop in several times a week. These LIHTC guidelines do not take into consideration long-term residents who have established a home. Why won't the government allow for a grandfather clause, especially for long term residents like my Mom? My Mom called me scared and crying when she had to sign her own eviction notice. While this action may be legal, it seems to me to be very immoral, cruel and WRONG to force an 84 year old to sign her own eviction letter after having been such a good citizen of her community. She was even honored a few years ago as the annual "Senior Queen" of Lakewood at a Lakewood Hospital event for her volunteer services. My Mom has been a long time resident of Lakewood and she now may be forced to leave the City and lose her home and all that is familiar to her. It is immoral that the Westerly is evicting long-time residents to qualify for these government funds. Maggie Town Rader LHS class of 1972 Jenny Town LHS class of 1969
