Bites Nearby: Greek Village Grille

Delicious Greek fare on Madison Avenue.

Anyone who has spent time on an island in Greece can attest to the brilliance of the cerulean water, the unwavering certainty of the sunshine and the prettiness of the traditional white-washed houses stacked up on hillsides.

If this were the backdrop to my foundation I can see why the Greeks that emigrated here proudly display those images in their diners and restaurants.

The Greek Village Grille has all the luminous whites and marine blues of coastal Greece. The interior décor is upbeat, clean and simple; there are 4 four-top pub tables lining the west wall; orders are placed at the counter. The lunch crowd is steady, mostly getting take-out.

The menu is available online – orders can be called in or faxed and delivery is available for a small fee, depending on the destination. I am guesing since they are open till 4 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays they have a great late-night scene, as well.

Pita Sandwiches, $5.50, come on warm pita with two souvlaki options, three gyro options (can also be doubled for $7), loukaniko (a country-style pork sausage), two bifteki choices and one vegetarian; there are 7 dips available with warm pita wedges, $5; Greek, Village or Mediterranean salads are $4 for small and $6 for regular. Entrées and platters, ranging from $8 to $24, have varying combinations of souvlaki sticks, gyro meats, mousaka, pastisio dolmades, and spanakopitas – all with toasty pitas, crumbled feta and creamy tzatziki sauce (yogurt, cucumber, garlic, dill). The meats are succulent and the portions are generous- but there is a list of extras that can be added or you can top off with a homemade dessert.
