John L. Yuhas Sr, Member of Lakewood Athletic Hall of Fame, Dies at 84

He graduated from Lakewood High School in 1947, where he was a three sport letterman for football, basketball and track.

 

John L. Yuhas Sr. of Avon Lake — formerly of Bay Village and Lakewood — died Jan. 7.

He was 84.

Yuhas was born on August 13, 1928 in Lakewood and had lived in Bay Village for 47 years before moving to Avon Lake 7 years ago.

In 1947, he graduated from Lakewood High School, where he was a three sport letterman for football, basketball, and track. In 1950 Yuhas joined the Army and in 1953 became a reservist serving until 1957. He  was a graduate from Ohio University and received his B.S. in education. He was an elementary physical education teacher for the Berea City School District for more than 30 years.

Yuhas was a member of the Lakewood Athletic Hall of Fame and Holy Spirit Parish. He was his grandchildren's biggest cheerleader. He was also a volunteer for the Bay Village High School Football Chain Gang and a volunteer for Bay Village athletics in general. Over the summers he worked for the Bay Village Parks and Recreation Commissions, where he was the baseball commissioner and golf instructor for many years. In addition he was an avid vegetable and flower gardener.

He married Rosemarie Siemer on May 30, 1958. They had two sons and two daughters; John L. Yuhas, D.O. (Kim) of Freemont, Jay Yuhas, D.O. (Michele Moore, D.O.) of Bay Village, Monica Mack (Frank) of Mechanicsville, VA, and Jennifer Ponce (Roberto) of Farmington Hills, MI. Other survivors include 10 grandchildren: Mike, Amy, Eric, Carolyn, Annemarie, Steven, Patty, Cyril, Isabella, and Carmen. He is preceded in death by his parents John and Elizabeth (nee Pach) and his siblings Veronica, Elizabeth, Francis, and Albert.

Friends may call to the Busch Funeral Home, 163 Avon-Belden Road, Avon Lake, on Thursday, Jan. 10, from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Prayer service at the funeral home, Friday, Jan. 11 at 9:15 a.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Spirit Parish, 410 Lear Road, Avon Lake at 10 a.m.
