Family-Focused Yoga: Prenatal Yoga and Reiki and Yoga for Mothers and Daughters

This holiday season, Pink Lotus Yoga--an eclectic studio in Lakewood--offers special classes aimed at family bonding: Prenatal Yoga and Reiki and Yoga for Mothers and Daughters.

This past spring, Pink Lotus Yoga in Lakewood launched a family-focused yoga program known as Village Yoga.  Village Yoga opened in the late spring with several Prenatal Yoga series and in the summer with Family Yoga. This holiday season, PLY presents two new Village Yoga programs aimed at relaxation, physical health, and female family bonding:  Prenatal Yoga and Reiki and Yoga for Mothers and Daughters.

The purpose of the Prenatal Yoga and Reiki*, led by Pink Lotus Yoga founder and director Marcia Camino and Reiki master Michelle Moos, is to provide pregnant women in all trimesters time to deeply relax and connect with their babies. Through the practice of yoga and Reiki, women and their babies can experience a strong sense of tranquility.

Marcia will lead participants through a yoga sequence of breath work, stretching, guided imagery, and relaxation with the help of bolsters, blankets, eye pillows, and aromatherapy for a complete immersion into serenity.  During relaxation, Michelle will provide each participant with approximately ten minutes of Reiki.

PLY’s other Village Yoga offering this holiday season, Yoga for Mothers and Daughters, is a special class for daughters ages ten and up and their mothers of all ages to practice together in the name of fun, bonding, and holiday activity.  This class focuses on the power of the feminine:  We’ll invoke a creative approach to our practice, inviting free expression into our yoga.  Working individually, in teams, and in a circle, we’ll look at many of yoga’s premier postures for women that bring on and help us maintain optimal health at all stages of life.  A playlist of songs and chants honoring women will accompany us in our practice.

The schedule is as follows:
Prenatal Yoga and Reiki:

  • Saturday, November 17th from 12:00-2:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, December 15th from 12:00-2:00 p.m.

Yoga for Mothers and Daughters:

  • Sunday, December 9th from 1:00-2:30 p.m.

*About Prenatal Yoga:  Medical industry professionals increasingly recommend Prenatal Yoga to their pregnant patients as a way to prepare them physically, mentally, and emotionally for the birthing process. Yoga postures in Prenatal Yoga open the pelvis, ease back pain, reduce pressure on ligaments, and promote strength, stamina, energy, and balance.  Breathing exercises—a vital part of prenatal practice—invigorate, balance, and quiet the body/mind. A long relaxation at the end of class provides women promotes serenity and provides much-needed rest.

About Reiki:  A light-touch or no-touch healing modality, Reiki is a Japanese word meaning “universal life force energy.”  Often, our bodies’ naturally flowing energy centers become blocked due to emotional and/or physical issues.  Reiki clears, strengthens, and heals energy pathways, allowing energy to flow in a healthy and natural way.  During pregnancy, the mother and the baby reap Reiki’s many benefits; anecdotal evidence shows that treatment alleviates the discomforts of pregnancy, eases the pain of childbirth, and may even decrease the duration of labor.
