"Power of the Pen" Qualifiers Move On To Regionals

LCA's Power of the Pen teams will complete at Regionals this Saturday at Perkins Middle School. The seventh and eighth grade students scored in the top 50% at the District tournament to qualify.

LCA’s first-ever Power of the Pen teams made their mark at the program’s District competition on January 19. Many LCA students, including the entire eighth grade team, qualified to compete in the Regional tournament to take place on February 23, by scoring in the top 50% of writers at Districts.

Congratulations and good luck to the following students, who will compete in the Regional tournament this Saturday at Perkins Middle School in Sandusky, OH:

Seventh Grade Qualifiers: Claudia Becker, Emma Becker and Kiara Hoefsmit.

Eighth Grade Qualifiers: Lucy Kress, Olivia Heidorf, MaryCait Dolan, Annemarie Krawmer, Dominic Giebel and Jackie Grant.

Team moderators and LCA teachers Eileen McGuire, Mike Soderquist and Sue Seeds have worked with the middle school teams since the fall to prepare them for the competitions, which culminate with a state final tournament in May. Soderquist and Seeds will serve as judges, along with teachers from other participating schools, for this weekend’s Regional competition.

Power of the Pen is Ohio’s award-winning program that promotes excellence in creative writing at the junior high level. Each year, over 80 Ohio school districts prepare teams for competition in a series of writing tournaments.

Please tell us how this competition operates. Are participants assigned topics, is it fiction or non-fiction, are they assembled together in the same room, what are the time constraints? Where can we read examples of their writings?

At Power of the Pen tournaments, students are given creative writing prompts about which they must write within a given time period. There are multiple opportunities to write at each competition and each writing sample is scored by judges on site. The program's website has all the details, a FAQ page and recent winning essays to read: www.powerofthepen.org

Thank you. That is important and interesting information for those of us who do not have school age children. In my experience, nothing is more useful than the ability to clearly express oneself verbally and in writing.
