Habitat For Humanity to Build Its Second Home in Lakewood

City's architectural board of review gives the green light for the construction of a home at 1549 Lakewood Avenue.

The plans for a Habitat for Humanity were unveiled — and approved — at the city’s architectural review meeting Thursday.

This is the second Habitat home designed for Lakewood this year.

This one, sitting at the corner of Lakewood Avenue and Franklin Boulevard, will be built at the site of a former apartment complex deemed a “nuisance” by the city and .

The home — on land originally considered for a new pocket park — already has a family looking to move in, said Habitat officials.

But the city had a couple of issues to sort out first.

“I appreciate the wraparound porch, but it’s not something we see a lot of in Lakewood,” noted the board chairman Michael Molinski, however the porch is staying.

Jeff Fillar, the city’s assistant building commissioner, suggested a garden window to “give (the house) some detail.”

The board approved the project, with the conditions of including a shed-roof at the rear of the home, and a kitchen "bump-out" window in the plans.

In January,  on a vacant plot of land at 2070 Dowd Avenue.

Both projects are expected to begin this year.

“Habitat has been a very good partner to us,” said Dru Siley, the city’s director of planning and development. “Really this is an opportunity to turn something that was in detrimental condition to this neighborhood … and build a great single-family house.”
